Special Announcement: Best Fish Fry

Postby LITT » Mon Mar 19, 2018 8:11 am

For the last several years, I have been on the quest to find the best fish fry. We have traveled wide and far only to find that the best fish fry is, in fact minutes from my home, located in Warrendale at the Northside Sportsmen's Association.

Meritorious Items:
The fish is filleted, breaded, and fried on site to order.
They use a delicious mancini's bun.
The french fries were fried to order.
The 'large' sandwich could have easily fed mrs. litt and i. we could have probably split a small.
They make this homemade hot sauce that was delicious.

Drawbacks:
Brownie was too dry.
Did not see beer.
Do to the made-to-order nature of everything, you do wait 15-20 minutes or so for your food.

While not a fish fry, my favorite fish sandwich (also awesome homeade chips) is Hoot's Again in McKeesport.

St. Mary's on middle road was a good fish sandwich. Unexpected bun, was a sesame seed burger style bun instead of a hoagie roll. Still very good.

That's a huge operation. Parking lot was full, the entire downstairs of Marian Hall was completely filled. I didn't expect that. They were running about 25 minutes behind their promise time, but no big deal.

Going to try the Hampton VFD on Duncan next time. Will probably wait for next year to try St. Catherine's of Sweden.

Had it Friday. Was a bit let down. The fish was okay, but is clearly storebought frozen as it is perfectly formed into one of those triangular patties. Mac and cheese was completely devoid of flavor, could have easily passed for plain noodles, very strange. Breaded mushrooms were good, not super greasy.

They charged my wife for three meals instead of two and she didn't notice till she got home, which is a mistake but still a bummer.

I can't see going back with other quality choices in the area. Wasn't bad, just not excellent and it's farther from my house than St. Marys.

Holy Angels in Hayes was pretty good. Their breading on the fish is a little different.

What's good this year, kiddos? My default is St. Mary's on Middle Rd. but always looking for new stuff. I promise I'll get out to St. Catherine's this year.

The day you try St. Catherine's, I'll try St. Mary's.

Nice.

If you are ever passing through Latrobe on a Friday, Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church is on another level. YUGE sammiches and they are quality.

Since I moved to Fayette, I rarely make it up to Greensburg way. It's easier for me to head the way of Uniontown. May have to make a special trip out there.

Fayette Co related, West leisenring vfd is having the Stone House (of route 40 fame) cater their fish fry. That's definitely on the list to try this year.

I'm not a big fish eater, but when you have a dish like "fish fry" or "fish and chips", what type of fish is it? or does it depend on the restaurant/time (aka the "catch of the day")?
