2018 Pittsburgh Pirates In-Season Thread

GMNH said this is the base of the team likely to go into next year too. Likely without J-Hay, Cervelli, etc. So another under .500 team here we come.
Losing J-Hay would be a good thing, and I think that they will keep Cervelli around.

A rotation anchored by Taillon, Williams and Musgrove isn't the worst thing, and it's not unreasonable to expect Archer to be a good bit better and Keller should be up at some point next year. And with the backend of the bullpen set, the staff should be set as the foundation to give this team a high floor.

That said, assuming that they keep Cervelli, the only positions I would feel confident about heading into to 2019 are CF, RF and C. They have to hope Bell comes back next year as at least league average, but either way, he'll be locked in to a ton of at bats. Dickerson will play LF, maybe Luplow and Martin and Reynolds push him from the minors, but there's no guy like Meadows anymore ready to step in. Moran and Freese are likely just going to be placeholders for Hayes whenever that happens. Frazier's strong 2nd half will likely now block Kramer from getting AB's. And who knows about SS.

All in all, they have a lot of unclear options for how to dole out AB's next year.

If they manage to trade J-Hay I don't think they'll get anything in return beyond the pleasure of not having to pay for his buyout next season. I fully expect them to try to sign Hechavarria to man SS next season. He's the kind of okay floor, low ceiling player that GMNH loves because their safe and really help build the 78 win team he's looking for.

They need power.
To expensive to acquire, they don't draft for it, and can't develop it.

Kudos to management for finding a way to make this decision worse. Instead of dumping him when they were in the hunt and he was costing them games, they do it three days before roster expansion when they’re closer to the Reds than Brewers.

Heard Jack Zarensick on the radio speculating the move was done now to give him the opportunity to be picked up by a contender.

I laughed my way into opposing traffic.

I actually came in here to facetiously say that's why they did it. So he can be on someone's playoff roster

His last 6 starts in 2017:

I don't get him.

Well, I for one think Hurdle did a great job of wasting a roster spot for SeanRod to see if he would get better so Hurdle could appear to be smart.

They should have made the Kela trade and then closed shop, this Archer trade looks worse everyday.

I thought overall he had a decent 2017 with some hiccups along the way. If you throw those last 6 starts into his 2018 stats you get 228/304/365/669, 3.04 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, in 177.2 IP. That's incredibly solid and even moreso when you consider those numbers include 9 starts this season where he sucked ass. The crazy part is that there hasn't been much deviation in his velocity and pitch movement throughout the season. He just must have spent twoish months this season grooving pitches straight down the pipe.

The only real qualm you can have with Wlliams is that he seems to max out as a 6 inning guy.

Maybe when he loses sight of that and thinks about trying to save himself early in order to go deep in games, is when he breaks down early in the game.

At least I hope that's what he is, because with this bullpen, the starters really need only 6 ips.

Agreed about Williams. One stat geek plan I kinda wanted the pirates to mess with was the pitching by committee plan the rays seem to be doing.

Regarding the trade it hurts bad right now in sss. A badass glasnow and meadows would feel so good. But a strong solid year by archer next year is probably more feasible than either of those two having big years. But it doesn't feel like it currently

The rationale for not calling up Kramer is more infuriating than the fact that they didn’t call him up. These guys are dolts.
