2018 Pittsburgh Pirates In-Season Thread

That is why Eric Hosmer and JD Martinez and neal walker are sitting unemployed. That why Edwin encarnacion got a good, but not gr8 contract even though he hits 35+ home runs each year. teams are tired of paying guys for past performance. the pirates won't pay for two reasons: a. they are cheap and b. it doesn't help the team win.
My only question here that would be telling for the Pirates. If contracts are getting "cheaper" and they're still not buying, then nothing changes anyways.
An optimist on that point would say that they don't want to be in a position of throwing good money after bad. I hope the lesson they learned was, when you an MVP player like McCutchen in the organization, you have to do better to make a run during the glory years. They got too enamored with their prospects and young players like Marte and Polanco, and tricked into thinking they would have un-disrupted career arcs.

Duuuude. Forget that one quote. Freese went complete scorched earth on the organization. I'm gonna buy a Freese shersey now.
"The last two years, we haven’t done as well as we could have because of our environment. That’s what I think. I walk in every day, and it’s not in the air. The demand to win just hasn’t been in the air. That’s what you need."
"The three hours when you’re in that dugout and on that field, it has to be about kicking some ass. When you’re losing 10-2 in the pouring rain against Joe Maddon, and you’re laughing, that’s not good. That says a lot.”
"People talk about the different feeling from [2013-15] to [2016-17]. When I walked in when I signed, I could tell. I walked into a clubhouse coming off a 98-win season, and I’m like, ‘Here we go.’ Then within a day or two, you’re like, ‘Man, what are we missing?'"
“We have to take pride on getting that vibe in the air, that when people come in to our place, they’re going to have to work their tail off to win that series. The last two years people come in and they’re just like ‘Oh, we have the Pirates, let’s take care of ‘em.’”
“As an organization, you have the ability to excite thousands of people. I don’t understand why you don’t take advantage of that. It just boggles my mind. Some people wait their whole life to have an organization win.”
“My opinion is I don’t think we lost 87 games because [Starling] Marte wasn’t there or [Jung Ho] Kang wasn’t there. We lost 87 games because our environment doesn’t allow it."

Freese's shade just isn't at management, the laughing while getting your ass kicked comment is 100% toward Hurdle.

More coherent organization of some of the quotes:

Wonder how Freese felt about Jaso being in the lineup every damn day despite consistently half assing his way to first base.

Really that's one of my big takeaways from Hurdles rah-rah company line speech. Either that guy has gotten used to losing (because he was much different the day he arrived) or he's complacent with management's goal to just filter money in.

Either way, I think his time should be up as coach of the Pirates, from my POV.

Kind of good to hear someone finally say it. Freese came from a winning franchise too, so he's not just talking out of his butthole.

#Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, on 3B David Freese saying the Bucs lacked a sense of urgency the past two seasons:

Harrison said he spoke with general manager Neal Huntington and explained his position.

“At the end of the day there wasn’t anything said or done that was like, aw man, I can breathe easy,” Harrison said.

“He talked to me, said he wants to win and this or that. At the end of the day I said it’s about action, not speaking.”
There's the money shot.

Huntington: "We want to win. We have the exact same goals as (Harrison/Freese) do, which is to win a World Series. There’s no two ways about it. That’s why we’re here. We made the moves we made to put this team in position to win a World Series."

Reminds me of a sign at a Mexican restaurant I used to frequent when I traveled to Newark for work. It said "free cerveza mañana", or in the Pirates' case, "We plan to win a World Series in the future."

According to the FAN, today is the day Nutting addresses the team. That would be something to see.
