The players are butthurt becuase teams have finally caught on and realized that paying guys for past performance is a bad idea, and as a result, a bunch of old/older guys hoping to get one last meaty payday are unemployed. The pirates, for the most part and to their credit, have avoided these kinds of contract (save for cervelli and maybe liriano). But the pirates traded away mccutchen, so it is easy to beat up on the pirates, even if cutch will probably end up being a poster child for a fat contract for a declining player.

I think it’s payback for being cheap, which is entirely different from inking the contracts you’re describing.

In which case, the Pirates wouldn’t be such a specific target (because it’s not like they stopped handing out such contracts / they weren’t there in the past). You’re getting weirdly homer, it seems.

The short segment on this I watched today summarized it as letting high dollar players go and not replacing them. Seems right.

I have no problem with getting called a homer in this case...becuase I’m siding with the pirates. I don’t give a damn if they spend money on free agents in the 2018 season becuase they weren’t going anywhere in 2018, even if they did keep cutch (who is no longer a primier, franchise type player) and cole (who didn’t get a lick better since he debuted in 2013.

Teams realize that the free agent market is for suckers. Too many mediocre guys get signed for too much money and more importantly, too many years.

Also, enjoy this article. Perhaps the MLBPA could use this as an instruction manual to explain why fatso lance Lynn cant get a favorable deal or that headcase arrieta is unsigned. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2761 ... nt-in-2018

Again, you’re implying that this is just about 2018 - the union is enacting some LT axe grinding.

Man, Pujols was just so damn good in the 2000s. It's very impressive that he has hit under .300 for the last seven seasons and still sports a .305 career BA.

There clearly aren't uniform values on players. I think it's created by the market dynamics and the revenue disparities. A 2 WAR player is worth a lot less in Pittsburgh that a 2 WAR player is worth in Boston, LA, or NY. When your at the point where LA and NY are maxed out and can't spend anything in FA, the team's that are looking at the FA market aren't valuing players in relation to $200M payrolls.

If the union was competent, they'd investigate solutions outside of the "No Salary Cap" mantra. This is obviously a demand side issue.

So what you're telling me is that in successful years the players were good and in unsuccessful years the players were bad? Well I'll be ****.

And Polanco only got better on his way to getting worse. 0.3, 2.1, 2.4, 0.5. He was a damn mess last season. That chart does give me a greater appreciation of just how damn good Cutch was in 13 and 14.

I think that just shows how much he sucked in 2015.

There also doesn't exist a reasonable explanation for 2016 McCutchen.

Still a ways to go in spring training, but I think the position players are looking set.

Starters: Cervelli, Bell, Harrison, Mercer, Moran, Polanco, Marte, Dickerson
Bench: Freese, Rodriguez, Diaz, Frazier, and I'm guessing Moroff because I think he could potentially play SS in a pinch.

I was half listening to Da Fan this morning but from what I gathered Moran has been underwhelming so far. Hopefully that straightens itself out.

TL’s roster makes sense but my guess is that Bryce Brentz makes the team over Moroff due to his lack of options and Hurdles belief that SRod is a Gold Glover at every position.
