City Paper put out an open call to Pirate fans to participate in an open forum and be reimbursed with free food and drink. I said WTF and volunteered, and thus will be participating, I believe years of practice arguing with the "Pirates are cheap crowd" has me prepared for this.

I'm going to say some nice things about the pirates:

For the most part, the people that matter are hitting. Marte, Polanco, Frazier, Cervelli and Osuna all have an OPS over 1.000 in spring training, which is nice. Polanco is hitting for power and not getting hurt. Marte appears to be back on steroids, hopefully this time they will be the steroids that you can conceal and not steroids you can buy from a meathead LA Fitness. Moran had hit the ball with no power but still sports a 333 average in a lot of at bats. So maybe, just maybe these guys will hit at a decent clip.

The bad news is that for the most part, guys that have pitched any amount of innigns have for the most part gotten roughed up.

Do people actually read the city paper or just pick it up in random life situations? Like waiting for Aladdin's pickup order to be ready?

i put no weight in spring training stats. Pitchers might get roughed up because they threw 3 innings of all fastballs just to work on their fastball. conversely, hitters stats can be wonky because they faced a guy throwing all fastballs or spent 3 games just trying to hit the ball the other way and went 0-10

good question. The last time I read a city paper was in Bea's Taco Town because I didn't have anything else better to read and the city paper thingy was outside of Bea's. That was probably some time last year.

yeah josh bell is hitting like 240 and has 2 walks in 30 at bats. I'm guessing he is working on something

I think the combination of Glasnow still being a mess and Coonelly and the Parrot participating at a Saccone event have sapped my care level about this current iteration of the Buccos.

I'm most interested in what Kramer does in AAA, Craig, Tucker and Hayes at Altoona and basically the entire WV Power roster.

Bell , Polanco and DIaz have homered today, and Dickerson hit a three run triple from what looks like something close to what the Pirates might have for an everyday lineup:

Harrison
Mercer
Polanco
Bell
Marte
Dickerson
Moran
Diaz
Taillon

I imagine that Mercer will be 8th and Cervelli 7th most of the time though.

My take/hope is that they will be in the middle of historically bad/playoff bound. Not-a-disaster would be a successful season in my opinion. Need a lot of guys to over perform or have breakout years.

@jakemkaplan
Here's how the Astros will line up their rotation to begin the season:
3-29 at TEX: Justin Verlander
3-30 at TEX: Dallas Keuchel
3-31 at TEX: Lance McCullers Jr.
4-1 at TEX: Gerrit Cole
4-2 vs. BALT: Charlie Morton

Due to a shift, Mitch Moreland bunted a double off of Glasnow. So there's that.

I looked at the box score and was going to commend Glasnow for having a pretty clean start (3 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings), but then I saw that he had another wild pitch. That gives him 3 in less than 12 innings. Dude is Rick Vaughn.

As the game rolls on, I'd like to share this gem from Francisco Cervelli, who said he cut gluten and dairy and fried food from his diet: "I try to put the right gas in my car. I am a Ferrari, so I want to treat my car the right way."

Would have been a better story, if he said he wasn’t getting favorable pitch framing calls, because umps hated his diet-induced gas.

I saw bits and pieces of his start on the prime sports fox sports root at&T sports replay last night. the wild pitch was a busted up curve ball that went about 55 feet, so it was certainly a wild pitch. that being said, about 3 pitches later he put what appeared to be a cutter that started inside and cut right over the inside part of the plate for a called strike three. it was a beautiful pitch.

He seems to bring a fair amount of....variance, even within a start. I’m not sure that will play well if they try to turn him into a reliever.
