GCL starting today, taking a look at the lineup, you can kind of see why they didn't draft many HS position players. They graduated a lot of guys from the DSL and signed Bae.

I think they are pretty stocked with players in the lower levels right now. That said, they don't deserve credit for acting like a competent organization, but they are putting themselves in a position where they can deal prospects for high end ML talent in future years.

I'm gonna be honest. I do admire your ability to continually find optimism with this team and management group. Also, I was not aware that Ji-Hwan Bae was back. A month ago they said he went back to South Korea to deal with sexual assault allegations and I figured that was the end of him. I assume this means he didn't do it, which means I'm glad he's back.

Also didn't know Bae was back. That's good, if he isn't a woman beater

The day that TL realizes that the Pirates are never going to change and it mentally breaks him will be a sad day for this board.

Would love to see some ninth inning magic and steal this. These are the kids of backbreaking games the Brewers used to take from us

Madden was going off yesterday about the detrimental effect the four man outfield rotation has had, so I figured I would take a look.

Before rotation:

Marte: 159 AB, 308/366/503/869, 195 ISO, 364 BABIP, 6 HR, 5 2B, 4 3B, 20.6% K, 8.6% BB
Dickerson: 182 AB, 319/357/505/863, 187 ISO, 333 BABIP, 5 HR, 15 2B, 2 3B, 10.2% K, 5.6% BB
Polanco: 169 AB, 213/325/432/757, 219 ISO, 239 BABIP, 8 HR, 13 2B, 22.9% K, 12.9% BB
Meadows: 29 AB, 448/448/897/1345, 448 ISO, 417 BABIP, 3 HR, 2 2B, 1 3B, 6.9% K, 0.05 BB

After rotation:

Marte: 77 AB, 221/262/403/665, 182 ISO, 233 BABIP, 3 HR, 5 2B, 19.0% K, 4.8% BB
Dickerson: 76 AB, 263/282/329/611, 066 ISO, 317 BABIP, 0 HR, 3 2B, 1 3B, 16.7% K, 0.0% BB
Polanco: 54 AB, 222/302/407/709, 185 ISO, 282 BABIP, 1 HR, 5 2B, 1 3B, 25.0% K, 10.9% BB
Meadows: 64 AB, 266/304/453/757, 188 ISO, 300 BABIP, 2 HR, 4 2B, 1 3B, 18.8% K, 5.8% BB

Meh. Marte has always been streaky, so some mediocrity after returning from injury isn't surprising though he's been particularly bad lately. Dickerson adjusting downward isn't surprising but the complete lack of power is a concern. Polanco is basically the same disaster he was before the rotation. Meadows is a rookie. Personally, I would be playing Meadows significantly more than Polanco, but this really just looks like Madden looking for something to dodint about.

He's really struggling without hockey and so far away from football season. Him complaining about people complaining about Shinnecock Hills being too difficult was unlistenable.

Please tell me you were listening yesterday when Stan made like a dozen attempts to help MM pronounce Koepka and Carnoustie correctly. It was horrific. I was tempted to drive off the Neville Island bridge. Made me long for the days of him continually mispronouncing Melancon.

I was in the car for that. Was amusing when they both admitted they don't play golf but had hot takes about the difficulty of the US Open.

He called Julian Edelman, "Julian Aydelman" a thousand times last week. Drove me nuts. I didnt hear the stuff with Stan but he was having people call in to explain to him why it was too difficult and just wouldn't accept any answers. Basically if the golfers didn't want their putts to roll 40 feet passed the hole into a bunker, they should have just nailed the putt according to him. It's that easy. No margin for error.

After last night's performance Josh Bell, who has not hit a HR since the last day of May, saw his OPS drop back down below 700 to a pathetic 699. Here's the OPS of Pirates 1B since I was born:

2017: Bell 800
2016: Jaso 766
2015: Pedro 787
2014: Davis 721
2013: Basura Caliente 762
2012: McGehee 674; Jones 832
2011: Overbay 649
2010: Jones 720
2009: LaRoche 770
2008: LaRoche 841
2007: LaRoche 803
2006: Casey 785
2005: Ward 723
2004: Ward 740
2003: Simon 722
2002: Young 730
2001: Young 708
2000: Young 744
1999: Young 909
1998: Young 809
1997: Young 867
1996: Johnson 819
1995: Johnson 746
1994: Hunter 712
1993: Young 643
1992: Merced 717
1991: Merced 772
1990: Bream 804
1989: Redus 834
1988: Bream 737
1987: Bream 747
1986: Bream 791

32 seasons covering a decade postseason drought and some of the worst names to grace this franchise and the only 1B with worse OPS are two examples of pure trash and a rookie Kevin Young. After batting 280/61/484/845 in May, Bell has dropped down to 204/323/296/619 with a 093 ISO in June. Thanks to the existence of Chris Davis and Ian Desmond Bell remains tied for the third worst 1B in MLB based on Fangraphs WAR, his OPS bests only Davis and Logan Morrison and is tied with the corpse of Albert Pujols, and his ISO is only ahead of Davis and Yulieski Guerriel, who is batting 300/324/396/720 on the season.

Completely stolen from Twitter:
Josh Bell had a two week stretch from May 6th to May 19th where he slashed .368/.444./.737.

Outsides of those two weeks (including his first two PAs tonight), he's slashing .219/.301/.311 with 2 home runs
Dude needs to go somewhere to figure out his swing before it's 2021 and we're talking about how Bell is just another Polanco.

I think what's more damning is only one season do we see an OPS over 900, where the offense must be a premium at 1B on a team like the Pirates. 1B and starting pitching have been this team's Achilles heel for decades.

Yea that’s definitely the other side of the coin. Other than some of the Kevin Young years (how was he not an all star in 99?) the Pirates have received mediocre at best production from 1B for a long time.

4th in war, 10th in OPS. Keep in mind this was the heart of the juicing era. Also a golden era of really, really good (but not hall of fame) steroid aided first basemen: Crime Dog, helton, giambi, Delgado, etc.

Wow. 909 OPS was 10th in the league at his position? Today he would sit third in the league. The steroid era was the **** best.
