It was funnier when they did that to Tim Howard and called him 'American Jesus'.

@Gaucho : Wasn't Danny aus den Birken supposed to be No. 3 goalie for Germany? What happened that he is now the starter?

And, BTW - is "aus den Birken" an aristocratic name? And if it is - are aristocratic names allowed in Germany? (Both Czechoslovakia and Austria abolished them after WWI.)

And yes - beat Canada!

Boy would it be wonderful to see Shuster win gold. The Canadians had won the last three curling golds, and had never finished worse than silver. And to come back from a 2-4 start to these games...beautiful.

afaik, aus den Birken became the designated starter thanks to some strong play in pre-tournament games. His name means "from the birches", so it's not aristocratic. Aristrocratic names are still allowed in Germany, nobiliary particles are considered simply a part of the name nowadays.

And yet, others would tear this patriot down for their own, (interestingly) unexplained reasons:
rumors abound that shuster is Russian, not yet confirmed

Funny, I always thought that every "zu" "von" "aus" is aristocratic for "from the House of." Austrians and Czechs made all aristocrats to drop the titles to strengthen the republic. Even though Czech aristocrats still go with some funny names, as evidenced by the present-day Czech politician "Jaroslav František von Assisi Klemens Alois Gabriel Eleonnora Josef Antonín Jan Bosco Jáchym Felix Maria 14. Fürst Lobkowicz" (though he is obliged to officially go by "Frantisek Lobkowicz" )

Back to Olympics - I bet people in Germany are closely watching the race for the best Olympics country medal record between Germany and Norway. Who has the likely edge based on remaining disciplines?

Lindsey Vonn's Olympic career will end with four Olympic appearances, with 1 gold medal and 2 bronzes. Not bad.

That's pretty low rent. Wasn't there another hockey player that threw a silver medal into the crowd once?

I get it, you lost. Have some respect for the time and place. Don't be a shtbag.

That might have been in juniors or IIHF. But yes, threw it into the crowd when Sweden lost to Canada.

Well, in reality, she underperformed at the Olympics stage, but that does not change the fact that she has been truly the best female skier of the past 10 years. After all, she went 2-3-2 during World Championships, and, even more importantly, she won the World Cup Downhill season race 8(!!) times and Super-G season race 5 times since 2008. In fact, in terms of World Cup, she has been the most dominant skier - male OR female - in history of the sport. Sadly, she attracted only a fraction of attention and respect she deserved in her home country. Has she been born Austrian, German, or Swiss, her face would be on Mt. Rushmore of skiing in each of those countries. Probably twice. :)
