The secret to that OSU game was the possession before, with the throw beyond the line of scrimmage. Keep that ball, probably get another score before OSU had a chance to go down for a go ahead score. Instead, stop the clock, and have to punt. For you know Big 10 refs were not going to call holding in the end zone that would have made it 28-21. Even though it was there.

The defense may have allowed the go-ahead score but it was the offense stalling out that set it all up.

Gonna have to disagree with ya there. It was 26-14 with 8:00 left and one stop wins the game. Penn State goes with the base defense and only rushes 4. That allows Haskins to do whatever he wants rather than getting a little bit of heat. Then, on the 26-21 TD pass, the ball is caught at the 45 or 50 by a receiver with zero momentum after the catch. Cover corner misses the tackle, the safety falls down, another tackle is missed and then the receiver weaves his way into the end zone. That's on the defense. Yes, at 26-21, the offense bogging down at midfield hurt things and I'm sure Trace regrets throwing that pass rather than keeping it and trying to get the first down on his own. But Gillikin pinned OSU on the 4 yard line and it took them all of 2 and change to go 96 yards. That's inexcusable for a defense that had played above average the entire game.

At home, healthy, and off a bye week and that’s the performance you put up? Get bent, Franklin.

That was a system-wide failure by EVERYBODY. They all sucked today. And yet, if AO squeezes a routine catch, they sneak out of there with an undeserved win. Too many stupid penalties (really, 69 with the unsportsmanlike on the goal line?...a roughing the passer on 3rd down...how many holdings?), beating your chest and waving your finger on routine incompletions and then getting burned 3 plays later, an offensive gameplan that only exposed that the wide receivers have no idea how to run routes or get open. After all, 3 QB's threw for 300+ on Sparty this year and yet, Trace barely gets to 200? Icing on the cake was 1:45 left and Sparty has 3 timeouts. OK, you do want them to use 1 or 2 on that drive but don't go into a damn shell against a team that stops just about everyone on the ground. Throw the damn ball and play to win rather than not to lose. A completely embarrassing effort today but the car salesman will probably sit there and talk about being elite...whatever that means.

Really puts a wet blanket over my trip to see them play Indiana next week. =(

I feel like this can be said about 95% of football coaches at all levels. Common sense seems to be in short supply.

Trace’s head wasn’t in it today. Weird decisions.

Also, two must-INTs dropped in the final few minutes.

James Franklin is now 3-11 against Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State.
6 of those losses were due to the heavy sanctions, so understandable.

So 3-5. Still not ideal. Rest of the schedule... hard games left are Iowa, Wisconsin, @ Michigan. Win AT LEAST 2/3 of those, take care of the cupcakes (Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana - should beat them), and how would everyone feel about 9-3? Me... eh. Feels like a missed opportunity with the hard games at home, blowing these last 2 the way they did.

Apparently it’s not far from being up double digits on Ohio State in the second half to needing to try a fake punt vs Indiana.

Ponderous.

I wouldn’t be shocked at all if they lose this game or if they score 4 touchdowns in the 4th and it ends up a route. This team is really capable of either.

I wish dropped passes by team was an easily found stat. I’d be very curious as to how high psu is on that list.

I went to that windy mess today. By far, the windiest game I’ve attended. So bad that it sent 3 PSU defensive playcalling placards rocketing across the field early in the 3rd. PSU really had no business winning this game. It took that KO return and a lot of IU mistakes - fumble, holding penalties - for them to pull it out. The playcalling was HORRENDOUS. Sanders is gouging the middle most every time he got it and they’d refuse to keep working it. And then, passing while up 12 with 6:00 left and then again with 4:00 left instead of killing clock with Sanders and the running game. I left when PSU got the ball with 4:00 left and as I’m walking down steps, they throw on first down. Just mindboggling how dumb the coaching staff was today. Having Trace look for deeper routes in that crosswind instead of intermediate stuff. And they’re making the same mistake with Sanders that they did when Barkley was a sophomore - not getting him on the edge with speed. They could have thrown swing passes for days and Sanders would have eaten up giant chunks. Part of that is playcalling but part of that is on Trace to look for the single instead of the home run.

Very lucky to get that W today. Might not be so lucky the next 3 weeks.

I feel like Sanders passed up a few nice holes today trying to get it outside.... but there was no speed.
