eddysnake's Thread of Stephen King

Postby PFiDC » Thu Mar 24, 2016 11:13 pm

Just finished Carrie. Can't believe I had never read it before. Actually I listened to it and it was read by Sissy Spacek so that was kind of cool. What an amazing novel but you can definitely tell this is his first published work as King. IIRC correctly King had thrown the book away and his wife found it in the trash, read it, and forced him to try and sell it. Thanks Tabitha.

I haven't seen the original film or any remakes or sequels. I don't want to. A film could never do this novel justice. The shower scene at the beginning is really difficult to get through. I find it interesting that, even though this is such an early work, there is a connection to another Stephen King story; The Body. Teddy Duchamp's dad's gas station is in Chamberlin. I honestly believe this would have taken place in Castle Rock had it been written later in his career.

The original film is worth a look on its own merit. To each his own, though.

Its for free on demand so I might give it a shot. I always make the mistake of seeing the movie. Brian DePalma is an excellent director so there is that. My wife has seen it and isnt happy with the changes.

Wait a year or so and then give it a go.

I never saw the remake, though.

I haven't read CARRIE in 20+ years but the original movie is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I love everything about it. The remake was okay, but completely unnecessary, like most remakes.

Anyone watch 11/22/63? I finished it up today. It was pretty uneven and the addition of Jake's "brother" was completely unnecessary. I'd have preferred that plot line had been excised and we'd have been given more of Jake and Sadie's love story, as that was a huge part of the book that was most glossed over in the series. All that said, I still got a little choked up at the finale and that's rare for me.

We have 3 episodes left and are very meh about it. The acting is pretty terrible for the most part. We will finish it tonight or tomorrow. I agree with what you said about Sadie. 11.22.63 is as much a love story (if not more) than it is about saving JFK.

Jackie Earle Haley cast as Sayre. I honestly had to look up who Sayre is and then found out apparently there are vampires in these stories? I really don't remember anything about these books, but it appears that character shouldn't appear anywhere near the first movie they are making which continues my uneasiness of not following the story that I don't remember anything about.

They've said they won't be starting at the beginning and will be somewhere in the middle. I think Sayre's pretty late on though. I think the movie's going to suck hard.

About the same for me. We all pictured Roland different than that but it's his acting I am more interested in. The gun at this hip looks interesting though.

Man, I've been putting off The Dark Tower books for a while now, and still think I'll have to put them off until I've finished the series I'm currently reading. I think the last King book that I read (or in this case, Bachman) was The Long Walk (A+, would read again).

Long Walk is fantastic if for nothing more than
a death by blue balls
If you are a King fan and have read a decent amount of his works I highly recommend The Dark Tower. I am not going to recommend the movies even if they are barely shot at the moment.

I've got all of the books in the order that most recommend reading them in, just haven't gotten to the point where I want to start them (knowing that I'll want to read through them all at once).

I remember waiting last year for his stuff to come out and then I ended up not buying any of it.

The problem with eBooks, at least on Amazon, is that the price is set by the publisher and stays artificially high in perpetuity. The Kindle edition ends up being 40% more than if they'd have to mail me an actual book. Then I go and read anything else and forget about it.

Can't wait for End of Watch. After the ending to Finders Keepers I am deeply invested and am very interested to see where this goes.

I hate having to carry anything on me anymore, so 100% of my reading is done on my iPhone.

Blech. I could never read a book on such a small screen.

All fiction is on the Kindle.

are we getting a continuation of the story rather than a adaption of what we already know, seems like it...
