My father-in-law got a nice doe last Wednesday, so I helped him with the skinning that night. It was quite a sight, four deer hanging in his buddy's garage. The other guy got a really nice 8-point, but it doesn't sound like he wants to mount it. Sounds like they are going to do the method where you basically put it in a cage so coyotes or whatever can't get it, let it decay, and then bleach it?

Oh, the skull. My bad. I was picturing the whole neck thing. Couldn't figure out where they were going with that.

Might I suggest a bucket of beetles - that'd be the quicker, cleaner method.

European mounts are cool for the mid-sized deer that you want to show off but aren't worth a full $5-700 shoulder mount.

as far as camping goes, how rustic is too rustic

Two upcoming winter events for this hair piece in February. The first is our annual winter camping event on the Laurel Highlands Trail. Last year was a big no-show due to a deluge, but my buddy and I persisted and still had a good time. Hoping for some blizzard conditions this year.

The second event will be held in a cabin near Davis, WV with 3 families with little ones. We'll try some cross-country skiing at White Grass, but my guess is the kids will just want to sled ride. Ages are 2-7, so I don't expect much. If all works out, we're going to hit a trail that will take us to Dolly Sods.

Answering roo's original questions:

1. Ohiopyle (bonus: favourite Provincial Park is Algonquin)
2. Of course. Still haven't finished hiking the Rachel Carson Trail, but someday.
3. I'd probably draw the line at trying to fully live off the land for a few days. But I'd pack a backpack with a few days' worth of food, a tent, and some supplies and just go as deep as I can into the wilderness.

a. as pertaining to another one of my poignant questions from meow's excellent thread, I would say that this is the most underutilized thread

b. Favorite park is ohiopyle but that really has as much to do with sentimental value as anything. I've only been to Poe Paddy/Poe Valley once and I really, really liked it. Same with Reeds Gap SP, which might be my actual favorite if I went there more. It is tent only, very quiet, and has lots of close hiking.

Yes, Ohiopyle is there for the sentimental value. As a kid, my grandfather would take us there and we would try to catch minnows swimming in the little ponds created by the river washing up onto the rocks. It's still a great park, imo. The proximity to the bike trail, the multitude of attractions (Cucumber Falls, the Slides, etc), camping, Fallingwater, Kentuck Knob...

We stopped by Hickory Run State Park once on the way back from visiting friends in Jersey City. The outcropping of boulders was the main attraction, but it appeared to have plenty of hiking trails and camp sites. I'd like to check it out for a long camping weekend sometime.

I camped there one night about 6 or 7 years ago. I do not recommend the campground as the sites were blah and the bathrooms were outdated

I still have been meaning to plan a trip to Cherry Springs and bring my astronomy stuff with me. Just afraid I'm going to plan the trip and then in true PA fashion the weather will be ass.

I'm glad I live in a state that doesn't have fishing seasons.

That would be pretty nice, not gonna lie.

I haven't had my fishing license in like 4 years and it saddens me and makes me a bad American.

Ill probably get back into fishing when my boy is older but for now, I'm good.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has made the decision to close the famed Glen Onoko Falls Trail near Jim Thorpe as of May 1, because it has been deemed "too unsafe". For starters, I hate decisions like these because I don't think we should be restricting access to everyone, even experienced hikers, because of the stupid decisions of a few. Ten people have died on the trail over 40 years, and I guarantee you many of them made poor decisions. One of the dead was a 3 year old boy, who had no business being on the trail in the first place. There have been other stories about women wearing clogs, etc.

It's a damn shame. That was actually on my summer list as we were planning on making a trip up there.

Never bought one, but the kevlar ones I've rented were the best. Super lightweight and strong.
