I’ve reserved all the bank holidays for going on hikes with the dog. Might go to Quebec Run Wild Area tomorrow.

Transplanting this here.
I love Quebec Run. It is a hidden gem back in there. Some beautiful views of windmills. I hunted in there one year and we had a heck of a hike getting my buddy's deer out. There's a road that intersects it. Sometimes they open it, if so that'd be the best spot to park.

Ended up going. Parked at the Mill run Trailhead. That road you are speaking of that intersects it had to be gated off, because i hiked on a stretch of it to get back to the car, and there're had to be 6 inches of snow or more on it with no evidence of vehicles on it. road to the trailhead was surprisingly fine though. it was an awesome time, and there was substantially more snow there than there was on route 40 let alone ohiopyle. added bonus: saw zero human beings. spent about 3 hours there, then another hour and a half or so in ohiopyle.

dog is super happy and super tired. i am super happy and my feet are killing me.

Went out to Keystone and managed to rack up 5.5 miles of trail walking. Not a bad way to spend a below freezing day.

Anyone know anything about the mid state trail MST around state college? I think the nice view is the the Indian wells trail?

I have hiked on the MST in two spots (Poe Valley/Poe Paddy and also near Little Pine SP) and did some volunteer trail care down closer to the Turnpike/Everett. Not really anywhere near state college though. My only advice is that it can get nasty/overgrown in spots. It isn’t steeper or rougher than the LHHT but you can definitely tell that a lot of people hike on the LHHT and not so many people go on the MST. That might not be the case around state college, but in my experience it can be “wilder”

Eddy, if you are looking for a great trail in Central PA, may I recommend the Standing Stone Trail? The SST includes the famous 1000 Steps on Route 22 outside of Mount Union. I am in a Facebook group for the trail and it is a really popular yet not too crowded hike.

I like wilder hikes, easier to get lost which is more fun.

1000 steps is definitely on our list

Going to put a few miles on the West Penn Trail today. Start at the rec area and do the switchbacks going towards Blairsville.

Nice day in the woods
Edward, how were the snow levels? I went to laurel summit on a day off last week and it was up to knee deep at some point. I actually tried to go to Roaring Run natural area but the doggo couldn’t navigate the snow. It was more manageable at Laurel Hill and Wolf Rocks though

Deeper than I thought they would be. Tracks were covered over as well so we were plowing through. It was a workout

What a Gr8 day today was. At 09:30 I picked up a used camper travel trailer. At 11:00 it was announced we are working from home until the end of summer. So I am looking for recommendations of where to go camping within maybe 3-4 hours of Pittsburgh.

Please send me all your spreadsheets and thought processes regarding your selection of trailer. I think we're a few years from going this route, but with all the covid monies I've been tempted this year. I don't have a truck, so adding that to the mix makes it a tougher get.

It might be a touch further than 4 hours, but Hocking Hills in Ohio is really nice

What do you have? They make nice 17 footers that are certainly SUV-towable.

My thought process was more focused around price than anything. It had to be priced right, have little to no leaks in the roof, and be as close to road worthy as possible as we would be towing it all the time. Some people will buy a brand new one, plop it on a permanent site for 6 years... These are nice because they haven't been towed but usually need new tires, brakes are seized, etc.

The one I ended up getting is a 2014 Salem by Forest River Hemisphere Lite. 28RKS. I am towing with a 3/4 ton diesel though, but I still think you could tow this with a stout half ton. The guy threw in literally everything I need, leveling blocks, hoses, surge protector, brand new mattress, hell he even left me his blender and kitchen utensils. I could've hooked to it at his house and went straight to the camp ground. He put a new TPO roof on it in November, just before tearing ligaments in his arm with a >1 year recovery so he decided to sell.

There aren't a ton of used ones out there and a lot of folks seem to be in the market for them right now. I have a feeling in 2 or 3 weeks the peak will hit as people are pulling them out of winter storage and the campgrounds begin to open in April.

Ty. Yeah we will want something for him to do but at this point a park playground suffices.

I have a Chevy Traverse, but unfortunately it doesn't have the tow package. So instead of 5000 pound towing capacity, I have 2000. Pretty much puts me in the pop up camper family, which isn't what I want.

I've always dreamed of driving a Class B or C down the road, as it's always intrigued me to be inside a house while it drives. But with little kids and the seatbelt arrangements, that pretty much crosses that off the list. So I'll either be in the market for a 4x4, or look at a newer Traverse with the tow package. Still limits me to maybe a 3000 pound trailer dry, which pushes me more towards a truck.

Looks like a traverse could handle 5k lbs towing, which would put you in something like this:

https://www.bestchoicervs.com/product/n ... 1395882-29

The only thing to be cautious about is the additional people/weight you'll have in the traverse itself. But a good weight distribution hitch could put you in a 4k GVW trailer.

Only if the tow package is included. I have a hitch that says 5000 pounds, but there's no button on the dash for Tow Mode. With it the software adds more engine cooling. Without it I'd probably blow my tranny trying to pull above 2k
