NTP66's thread of IT

Postby willeyeam » Tue Mar 03, 2020 8:15 am

So we have a, we'll call it, file room software. All our clients engagements and workpapers are stored in there. Well Sunday around 5pm IT decided to backup to a Saturday night 8pm backup of it without warning. We could have saved our work we did Sunday outside of the software.. So partners are already pissed because everything everyone did on Sunday is gone. Now the whole Citrix server has been down for two hours today and everything is web based through Citrix so there's 0 work being done firm-wide. Good stuff

I'll get your environment back up and running within 2 hours for a nominal fee. Spread the word.

Haha..... the fan/sink combo arrived today; Amazon simply slapped a shipping label on the product packaging. "Hey everybody, here's a nice PC cooling unit."

Apparently it was a data center issue and no fault of our own. No Citrix heroics needed from NTP quite yet

In my new position, I have a need to run a windows-only application. I want to run it on my laptop so I can work on it remotely, but my MacBook Pro is an early 2013. I installed a trial version of Parallels along with Windows 10. Windows runs fine but as soon as I open the application, CPU usage jumps to 200+%. I'm guessing the system just can't handle running MacOS + Windows + a fairly hefty application.

Would Bootcamp give me better performance? Or am I better off getting a windows laptop that's solely for this program?

Charlie Feld was a keynote speaker at an event we had today. Pretty interesting man, but if I'm still working at 78, there's something wrong.

So instead of disassembling my whole pc I decided to just clean the thermal paste off my existing cooling unit and apply a new coat and reattach the old fan. When reassembling everything, I ended up with one motherboard screw and couldn't find the attach point for it for several minutes. Then one of my case screws for the side fan disappeared.

And then half an hour later it overheated and SCRAMMED again. :face:

@NTP66, I'm working on server with 2012 and despise that tiled start menu. Can one bring back the regular start menu?

Classic Shell works on Server 2012. I still use it in W10 because of some limitations that still exist for my liking.

This thread seems like a good place.

Anyone having MMS send issues on ATT the past few days/week?

My wife has had weird issues. The neighborhood moms have a group text going, and my wife will go an entire night without a single message. Then in the morning, 50-70 messages come through at once. Her phone literally goes nuts for five minutes as it happens. This has happened twice in the last two weeks.

I have no problem receiving them, but sending, people will complain I send a flurry at 3 am... It's not me, it's my network...

You're waiting hours to receive texts?

Yes, happening here in SC as well. ATT people aren't getting messages delivered when sent.

Dude, that sounds like the same issue, only my wife would have been on the receiving end of what you're seeing.

We have had similar issues. Wife/myself/mother in law. Wife is on AT&T, mother in law and I are on verizon. Wife sends messages to group text and we get them in a flurry hours after the fact sometimes.

No it's been happening more frequently lately though it seems. They both want to blame verizon, I'm like.. it could be either carrier. It's annoying either way.

Any way to 'bridge' audio output so it pushes the same output to both a USB headset and the computers speakers?

Had friends over a few weeks ago and we were doing some VR stuff on the PC. But the simulator sound comes through to the Rift headset via USB. People watching on the external monitor couldn't hear anything as the PC speakers were not being used. This seems simple enough but I'm being lazy and not bothering to search for it.
