Does that happen often? Because that's absurd.

server problems don't happen often...which is probably why it's difficult to get them on the horn quickly. it's not part of their day-to-day.

Aren't your ops guys on-call? Given that stuff like that affects the bottom line, I'd have to believe that they are. I've never worked at a place where server ops people weren't on-call.

I get a call today that "every time I open excel, the cursor start automatically moving to the right. I'm not even doing anything. Do you think it's the mouse or something in excel?"

Walked in her office, solved in about 3 seconds.
The cursor will move to the right non-stop if you have a notebook resting on the space bar.

Friend of mine is trying to install Discord on her desktop(Win7), but it keeps telling her she is missing this: api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-I1-2-0.dll

Any idea what causes that? I haven't anything approaching a solution from Discord. I think it is a Win7 error, though.

Sorry, can't help you there. I spot checked a few of my W7 devices, and I don't have that DLL at all. Any chance they haven't installed a prerequisite, like MS Visual C++ or an SDK?

Not likely. She uses her PC for gaming and not much else.

Thanks, though. :thumb:

Yeah, the content proxy has been working overtime lately, broken images for me everywhere.
Figured this belonged here.

Back at one of my first IT jobs, our manager (who was a prick) forced us to install Websense because he didn't want anyone doing any internet surfing. Any. We did so, and created these ridiculous policies that basically blocked everything. And then we applied it to just his machine.

So, oddly enough, I just ran into a very similar error on a Citrix install at work. The solution pointed me to this Microsoft KB, article. While the file you mentioned above isn't included, that lead me to this article. I would definitely try the applicable installer from the first link, and if that doesn't work, try one of the more recent Visual C++ Redistributables.

There was an older guy at a place I had an internship, real jerk of a guy and no one liked him. So the one engineer had scripts running in the background that would do different functions for certain things. If he typed a few specific words in a short amount of time the CD tray would open, certain words would auto-correct to others. Then he'd get nervous since he had no clue what was going on.

Wow, I was 100% convinced that was a Dell. It was actually one of the recently recalled HP Envy's.

A similar effect can be given by the Thinkgeek USB Phantom Keystroker:

The Phantom Keystroker may look like a harmless flash drive, but it's actually a devious contraption of unlimited office-based torture. Simply discreetly attach the Phantom Keystroker to any extra USB port on your victim's computer, no drivers needed. The Keystroker emulates a keyboard and mouse and periodically makes random mouse movements, turns on/off the Caps Lock, and types out odd garbage text and phrases. A set of switches allow you to choose amongst these tortures or select all three.

That must be installed on the computers of each admin here, given how well updates and changes are handled.

Is Amazon under some kind of cyber attack today? When the site loads, it looks like it's from 1998.

Also, the Home Depot site can suck a bag of monkey dicks.

Also, possibly related..... can anyone tell me how to configure a VPN? I just signed us up for Nord, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Configure it where? Nord’s site should have instructions for most devices.

Having some annoying issues with Chrome on my Windows 10 laptop...

Every couple boots, Chrome decides its not going to load any websites, and even worse, effectively freezes up the entire laptop.

The only "fix" that I've found so far is to rename the Default folder under AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/UserData (think that's it) and then start it back up. It asks me to login, then downloads my bookmarks and such and then seems to work fine...

But sure enough, within a couple boots, it goes back to freezing up and I have to repeat the cycle.

It's getting really old. Not really finding any particularly useful advice online so far, so perhaps one of 5AF's IT superstars can help?

I could not use Chrome but... I wanna.
