NTP66's thread of IT
For starters, the older BPON units are only good for 50mb Internet, though I think they have made exceptions for 75mb packages. If you have 75mb internet, I doubt they will replace yours with another BPON.
The GPON units also have gigabit Ethernet ports, whereas the old ones have 10/100. There’s less latency in the newer units, too.
For me, the biggest difference was the stability. Not once have I had a single issue with my TV in the new unit, whereas I had three old ONTs in a row that had their own separate issues.
I would 100% ask for a new unit, and I doubt they’ll give you a hard time about it. I was worried that they would give me a hard time and was prepared to upgrade to the 100mb tier only to get the new equipment, and then drop back down to my normal 50/50 package.

Hmm I currently have the 100/100 package and every time I’ve run speed tests, it’s been spot on. So I guess my ONT isnt that old. I did notice the battery had an install date of 2013 on it so it’s not very new either...For starters, the older BPON units are only good for 50mb Internet, though I think they have made exceptions for 75mb packages. I’ll talk to the tech about it on Friday. I assume he’ll have a replacement ready just in case

Does your ONT look like this (old BPON):
Or this (new GPON)?
I’m starting to think that you actually have a newer GPON unit if you’re on a 100mb package. Verizon’s own policies prevent a tech from installing a BPON unit in a house with 100mb internet, and to always use Ethernet for speeds over 75mb. This is per a buddy of mine who is a Verizon tech himself.
If you tell me that you have an old ONT running on coax and a 100mb package, I’m going to shake my head, because that would be very wrong.

Wow, I’ve never even seen that kind of ONT before. It actually is a GPON unit, though is very old and was phased out years ago.

Figures, he deleted all of this board’s features instead of this thread.

I was searching for something, and came across an old thread about IT. They mentioned that Kicksave was going to delete the thread, which is what I was replying to. I guess it was linked instead.

Verizon replaced the ONT with a new unit, both inside and out. Tech said the Ethernet port went bad and was surprised to see such an old ONT still running. He estimated it was installed in 2004. They definitely should’ve replaced it was I set up the service last year.

My college professors did me a great disservice by not telling me about how normalized tables in relational databases are very often not how the real world works. I built too much stuff for too long that was vulnerable to heavy load because I was taught it's better to have 30,000,000 records in a table rather than add 100 columns dynamically and leave most of the fields blank.
How's that for a niche post.

What do you guys use for editing movies on Windows 10? I use Windows Movie Maker (unsupported) still, and it's serviceable. But I'm starting to demand more from it than it's capable of. Namely I want to be able to do 'picture in picture' at some point.
Any decent programs out there? I'd pay up to, like, $50. I'm not looking to make crazy special effects or anything. Just the ability to switch between multiple audio tracks and do the picture in picture bit.

I use Cyberlink PowerDirector 16, which I think does a decent job, and has a good interface. If you decide to pay for it, I believe it's in the $50 area. The software does have a PiP feature to make that function easier.

Thanks, I will give it a look.
I was reading a bit and VSDC looks promising. It's free and I have a video I need to produce soon so I think I might give it a shot.

If you do give it a shot, let me know what you think about it. I rarely do any video editing anymore, unless I'm creating custom clips for my daughter (like creating a Moana songs-only movie), but I'm always open to checking out other editors.

Will do. I'm going to download it today but I probably won't have a chance to work on any projects until Sunday. If you do give it a shot, let me know what you think about it. I'm two doors down from our IT office that had that same issue over the summer when we got our first batch of Win 10 laptops. I'm sending that along to the IT director.

So I bought that spaceship router that NTP suggested - works great - but my work remote still gets dropped periodically throughout the day for about a minute each time. I only notice the laptop dropping signal, but that doesn't mean my other devices don't. That said, is my laptop's (5 years old) wireless thing dying? How can I get that?

When you say you notice the drop, are you actually seeing your wireless signal go to 'Disconnected' in Windows temporarily, and then it reacquires the signal? The next time you notice the network drop, do the following:
- Click on Start
- In the Run box (or if in Win10, just start typing) and type eventvwr.msc and hit Enter
- When Event Viewer launches, expand Custom Views and click on Administrative Events
- Look through the events to see if anything matches up with the exact time that you notice the drop
