This is an instance where FindR would probably come in handy: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... hdgc?hl=en

I received a hard drive from a vendor that refuses to mount on my Mac. It's a WD easystore 25FC, formated as ExFAT. I can see it in Disk Utility, but it will not mount even when trying to force mount. First Aid shows no errors. I know I can restore and reformat, however, I need the data. Any suggestions?

I'll ask the Mac guys I work with to see if they have any suggestions.

:thumb: Thanks. I've tried multiple USB cables and it's plugged directly into the Mac so it's not a power issue. I can always ask the vendor to send another drive. WD easystores are garbage.

Waiting for the other guy to get back from lunch, since he's the more technical guy. First guy said it should mount no problem.

Yeah I see no reason why it isn't mounting. I have a few other WD easystores and they mount fine.

He said the two things you can try would be to a) try and mount it from the command line as opposed to the GUI, or b) try and mount it when booted from recovery.

Programmers/smart people: Is there a technical term to encapsulate this scenario?

If Document A comes in ---> Place it in Bucket B
- Failing the existence of Bucket B, place it in Bucket C
- Failing the existence of Bucket C, place it in Bucket D

I called it "error stepping" on the fly, but I doubt that's a term...to avoid sounding like as much of an idiot, is there a technical term for this...?

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I need some help troubleshooting a PC problem.

Having a serious overheating issue with my CPU. I normally run at 60°C or so, spiking into the 70s or 80s as normal with heavier use. But in the past several weeks my core temps have gotten up to 110°C and even close to 120°C at one point. Just today, my computer has SCRAMMED itself five times and automatically shut down. And this is doing nothing more taxing than streaming video.

All four case fans rotate freely at full RPM, same with the the CPU and GPU fans (and to be clear, this is a 100% air-cooled rig). The case is as dust-free as I can get it (I usually air can it once a month as a practice). I built this rig in around 2011, so I'm thinking the thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink is gunked.

That’s precisely what I was going to point to if your fans are working properly. Have you either booted into the BIOS or used an app and validated the speed that the fans are running at? If they’re spinning much slower than they’re rated for, you’d want to replace the fans, too.

If you’re going to pull the heat sink off the CPU, it might be time to invest in a better heat sink, too.

I use HWMonitor and Core Temp, and the only value that's ever outside of spec is CPU temps. Booting into BIOS is beyond my feeble skills.

What is a good aftermarket heat sink? I just used the one that came with the proc (or mobo, I forget how that works). CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE (Deneb).... like I said, rig is nearly ten years old.

This is what I have in my current rig, built in 2014: https://www.newegg.com/cooler-master-hy ... 6835103099

Anything Cooler Master is decent, IMO. Just make sure you check clearances before buying anything, because this one is quite tall.

Now that I’ve seen when I built mine, I’m tempted to build a new rig even though I have zero reason to really do so. The only one I can come up with would be to get a new MB that supports the latest M.2 drives, which would require a new OS for me.

Haha, this make me feel better... I was literally just on NewEgg looking at the 212 Plus.

I have a HAF 932 case, so I should think I'll be okay with clearance.

Which, btw, while opening up your NewEgg link my CPU temps spiked to 116°C. Yahoo.

Make sure you add Arctic Silver to your cart... and check Amazon. They may have better pricing on this stuff.

Nevermind, I checked for you. I was right, Amazon is cheaper and if you’re Prime, you’ll get the parts quicker.

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is what I've had on my gaming rig for years. It certainly keeps an overclocked Core i5 cool. It should easily fit in a HAF 932 case, because it fits in my smaller HAF 912 with plenty of room to spare.

I just replaced my Linux box, which was also about 10 years old. It was an AMD Athlon II 605e, and I'd started to notice that the graphics weren't able to keep up with stuff like viewing HD videos. The new machine is an Asrock DeskMini A300 barebones with a Ryzen 3 3200G, 16 GB of memory, and a 500 GB Samsung M.2 SSD. The DeskMini A300 is only slightly larger than an ATX power supply, and it struck me as a good deal at $160 for what is a case/motherboard/power supply combo. I had to take a trim ring off the stock AMD Wraith cooler, but I did manage to fit it inside. That's the only fan in the case.

I would have preferred to use one of the lower-power "GE" Ryzen chips, but from what I can tell AMD has never sold those in retail packaging, and they're nearly impossible to find.

I’m still an Intel guy, and if I built a new machine, it’d be Intel powered.

Many years ago when I first started building computers, AMD (and ATI, which AMD later bought) was much friendlier to the open-source community in terms of releasing specs, helping out with open source drivers etc., and I was building computers that had to be able to run Linux well. So I've been an AMD guy for more than 20 years, and every Linux box I've built has been an AMD machine. The first one was an AMD K6-2 at 366 MHz. That said, I bought an Intel chip for the gaming rig, although the next time I build I might buy one of the 12-core Ryzen 9s. That won't be for another year or so.
