NTP66's thread of IT

I’m trying to envision a scenario in which I’d want the Photoshop transition? Trying to color correct underwater footage from vacation this year was the last straw for me. I know it’s difficult to begin with, but PD just did a poor job. It’s also slow as hell.
Most recently an interview setup had some distracting **** in the background, cords going into an outlet and a bright red fire alarm. Since the subject never crossed over, the easiest solution was to send a frame of it over to Photoshop, remove the distraction stuff, send it back, and throw a quick mask on the footage.

Ahh, interesting. Probably wouldn’t apply to the stuff I do, but good to know nevertheless.

Give Premiere a go. If it’s too overwhelming (I doubt that’ll happen), you could always try out Premiere Rush, which is basically Adobe’s iMovie.

Two things:

1. Premiere is definitely going to take some time getting used to. Looks pretty damn powerful, but it's a learning curve coming from PowerDirector.

2. CrashPlan has once again modified their policy, with only one month's notice. No longer can we indefinitely keep files backed up, with the max now being 90 days. This was the last straw for me, so after 9 years, I'm cutting my losses. I'm trialing Arq Backup right now, using Wasabi S3 cloud storage. The GUI is a little unrefined compared to CrashPlan, and the reporting is basically bare bones, but it offers basically the same features as the old CrashPlan service, and appears to be considerably faster.

One of my annoyances with MS is that they seem to have Office product keys conveniently expire. That's how they got me off of Office 2016 and onto an academic license for O365. That license has expired since it's been over a year since I graduated.

I'm never going to pay for a subscription-based productivity suite. So for the two machines I have that were affected, I moved to FreeOffice. It was a toss-up between that and OpenOffice which I've used in the past. I went with FO this time because their most touted feature was high compatibility between it and native MS file formats. So far I'm pretty happy with it for what I need it for. My main law firm PC is still running Office on a HUP license.

O365 licensing - and how those licenses are managed in an enterprise - is a **** disaster, and I hate every aspect of it. I'm still running Office 2016 at home, but I'm using my old company's MAK license. I won't be subscribing to O365, either, even though I could get it for 40% off.

We don't even have a HUP agreement for O365 which is pretty surprising. SaaS isn't unique to MS, I won't pay for Adobe DC either. But MS is the worst for it.

I was a Server Admin when Server 2012 came out. The licensing for that was nutty. Had to do with the number of cores, users, etc. I took a class on it and still couldn't keep it straight. I think they do that on purpose so you'll over-license just to be safe.

SQL licensing is bad until you get a peek at VMware licensing and realize that it could be worse.

The company I work for probably makes 90% of our revenue from software licensing and maintenance on those licenses and I've never had a good handle on it. It also seems to change with every release so yeah, they used to license by core, etc.

And worse yet is when they audited the company I'm working with and it was me who had to complete all the required docs for the audit. They were found to be compliant with their licenses in the end. The customer was pissed.

Has anyone been brave (or foolish) enough to upgrade to windows 11?

I have it installed in VMware Workstation. Hate damn near everything about it, and have no plans of upgrading my main box to it. Visually, for the most part, it does look great. Functionally, it’s trash. It also has a long list of bugs of features that currently do not work. Why? Because Microsoft rushed it (surprise!).

They need to allow the classic Windows 10 Start menu, too. Their decision to remove it is going to make enterprise adoption very slow.

We did a release to production yesterday and when we do, sometimes we get complaints that our user base gets a blank or stale page that next morning...seems quite obvious that it's a cache issue (looking at it as a non-dev, I see we do no-cache AND no-store, which feels silly, and a likely root cause)...so we got an uncharacteristic amount of complaints...as usual, I suggest Ctrl+F5 to get through. Well, for whatever reason, upper management flips a goat and asks us to revert...and I suggested that will actually likely serve to worsen the problem because some of our users have overcome the issue to the new version, so going back will...well, you can figure it out...

So, as a result of this, there was a suggestion that we shut down new development for the rest of the calendar year to "clean up the system" to which I said, "sure" because then I can basically take off for the remainder of the year...but ultimately I had to convince them this wasn't indicative of the new software code being faulty and this is just a minor blip...it wasn't as easy of a conversation as I had hoped...

Damn, those keys are beautiful. Unfortunately, they're not compatible with my IBM-style keyboards. :(

My dumb **** Samsung TV doesn't do **** because it's a ****...

I want to stream my desktop (in another room) to my TV in my living room. But my TV doesn't register the USB device and the .apk file on said USB to let me ApowerMirror my way through this whole thing...

Running a 25 ft HDMI cable through my apartment (though, it's just one room over) doesn't seem ideal...has anyone wirelessly HDMI'd from their computer to a TV and if so, did it suck?

What are you streaming? A Chrome tab? Or another app/program? Because if you are wanting to stream hockey games from Chrome to your TV, a Chromecast would work. We do that all the time with good results.

I think he's trying to mirror his laptop's screen entirely, not just Chrome. Otherwise, yeah, I'd have recommended going the Chromecast route.

It's a standalone desktop app that opens a media player app. I just can't get anything to see the TV on my home network. Even when I use the TV's dev app tools to get the specific things that I'd think I would need...

The only thing that ever sees my TV is my Samsung tablet and even then the screen mirroring via SmartView is such that it isn't full screen...
