Perhaps it was the years of sitting in their parents' basement playing video games and eating pizza and Doritos until 3am every night?

Lots of jobs are sedentary. The civil engineers aren't fat. *shrug*
Those guys are probably single and play games and never leave their pc.

Well, that would certainly bolster the stereotype.

I'm just thinking philosophically. I wonder if these people are so engrossed in a world that isn't tied to physical reality that they just don't stop to care much about their outside appearance or fitness. When you spend all of your time staring at screens working issues that you can't just reach out and touch maybe their projections of themselves work more like an avatar; if they're really good at their digital work maybe their physical bodies just take a much lower priority.

That kind of falls apart when you consider they have to interact with customers; but having been a PC tech I know how they regard customers so its unsurprising that they are not motivated to keep up with appearances. I have observed, without fail, that there is a glass ceiling for the slovenly. I have never seen a fat tech move up the ladder, so to speak.

I agree with all of that. I think it also depends on work environment, too. Healthcare is pretty fast-paced, and I can't think of any desktop techs here [that I personally know of] that fits the mold you're describing.

Does it matter what kind of DisplayPort cable to get? Or is it like any other cable, where it comes down to build quality?

I upgraded my PC monitor a couple of weeks ago to a 1440p that can overclock to 155hz. I noticed that most of the cables on Amazon list 144hz as the top refresh rate.

I've been buying the Amazon Basics cables with success. I generally try to get the shortest one that works in my application. It shouldn't matter but it does, imo.

DisplayPort 1.2 supports higher than 155hz, so you can really go with just about any cable. Just buy one of good build quality. I would be buying this cable if I needed one based on reviews alone.

Can someone tell me what dumb*** setting I accidentally enabled here:

See the 'clear' box? it follows my cursor around in all programs, and prevents me from clicking anywhere inside of it?

Yes, certified even, but I haven't touched it since 2016.

Yes, not certified, don't do as much in it as I used to. Ask away.

It's a rather basic question: I was recommended for this course since we have some money in our budget: https://www.nhpittsburgh.com/training-a ... on-manager

What things should I brush up on beforehand?

Windows OS Deployment process as an overview. How an OS is deployed remotely in terms of package sequences. They'll probably go over all of that with you but if you have a familiarity with the process going in it will help you contextualize it from the beginning.

It's pretty slick nowadays, not a lot of manual scripting unless you make your own patching packages.

Do you currently work in SCCM at all, or is this a new adventure for you? That course is targeted for administration, so there's no architecture or engineering involved, which is nice (SCCM architecture can be a real **** chore). I'd think that anyone with solid AD knowledge would be fine, and I can't think of anything specific that I'd brush up on, to be honest. If I had no SCCM knowledge, that's the course I'd be taking, because it's going to be where you spend 90% of your SCCM time. Once the architecture piece is done, you shouldn't have to touch it for a long while.

No experience in SCCM but have enough experience with AD to where I wouldn't feel out of place.

Looks like these classes run weekly with spots going out as late as December, so I figured if there was a good time to catch up on some things I may have forgotten or never knew.

Someone at work just sent out an e-mail referring to DotNet Framework 4.0.

First time I've ever seen .NET referred to that way.

Nerd thread - say I'd like to have someone update the board because I maybe don't have the time to commit like I thought I would. Who could do it here?

Message me if interested.

On a serious note, @Kane is the obvious choice here. I want to say that he has performed the upgrade elsewhere.

Not only do we have DotNet in our software folder, we also have a Microsoft DotNet folder and a Net Framework folder.

I'll let you imagine how much overlap is involved.

I haven't personally performed an update, but it's pretty straightforward and the update process has plenty of instructions. Numero uno priority would be to have a backup before it begins, which I would not be able to do. Whoever has access to the back-end would need to do that ahead of time. TBH, I'd really think about doing it in-house instead of bringing in a non-admin.

That's fine then, I have back-ups already. I'll just have to carve out time. The challenge/fear is that there were no back-ups made to the prior update and it wrecked whatever internally we were working on. So I'm backing up, an already flawed system.
