there should be windows 7 downloads all over the internet. it's not illegal or anything since you still need an activation code (which may be on a sticker somewhere on your machine).

Getting new hardware at work. The new monitors are about 2" shorter but much higher resolution and substantially brighter. Not sure how I feel about this. I'm hoping the higher res balances out the smaller screen, but it goes against my mantra of "as much screen real estate as you can afford." Harump.

our spam protection isn't working at the moment at the office. while i'm sorting it out with the vendor, i'm getting people here sending me e-mails complaining about it.
i would feel a little bit bad for them if it wasn't solely dude to them using their work e-mail to sign up for all kinds of things on the internet. i use my address for...you know...work e-mail and have gotten 2 junk e-mails in 24 hours.

I love supporting software that we don't actually "officially" support anymore just because someone complains enough.

Just had this exact rant today at work. I updated everything to Java 8u51 for security reasons last week. Now I'm getting a flood of tickets requesting we install the old version again. It's not authorized, and is a Category 1 vulnerability. Go away.Source of the post I love supporting software that we don't actually "officially" support anymore just because someone complains enough.

Good call. Finally got everything of my original disk that I could. Going to try and access the recovery partition and reinstall from that but will go that route if that fails. If I ever build or renovate a house, I'm doing the same. Not a fan of wireless if wired is possible.

I rented a house owned by an IT dude and he was nice enough to CAT-5-ify the joint before he moved out.

anyone jumping on Windows 10 today?
I might put it on my desktop. They've gutted the media features so its not going anywhere near my tv. My netbook has XP which I've kept for working remotely. But for day to day I boot into Linux Mint.

Win10 day is tomorrow. I already signed up my two main notebooks and my desktop for it. Any other OS needs I satsify with VMs (mostly Kali Linux). The Win10 deployment is staggered, though, so you may not actually get to download it for a few days. I'm hoping as an insider all the reservations associated with my account get deployed tomorrow, but I really don't know.
I've been running the Technical Preview on one of the notebooks since January and I like it a lot. And since I used MS Server 2012 Hyper-V to setup the VM farm on my server, I can only access it from the Hyper-V manager that comes with Win 8.1+. Right now all I have is two Win7 machines and the Win10TP machine, so the upgrade will really help me a good bit in terms of flexibility.
An unintended consequence for me, however, is that I won't have any more valid Win7 machines or keys. I was going to study for MCSA Win7 but without a decent platform that will be a bit fruitless. The plan was to secure MCAS Win7, do the transition exam to Win8, and then the transition exam to Win10 someday but I think I'm going to start fresh and work towards Win10. Need to start thinking more about the future instead of what I'm doing now.

We have three Windows PCs at home. Two are running Win 8.1, and one with 7. Two of the three are getting the Win 10 upgrade notification, and one is not. I'm thinking about upgrading on the older PC with Win 7, but I would like to try it on my main gaming PC - the one without the upgrade notification. Isn't that weird (2 of 3 having a notification, not that I want to upgrade lol)?
What's involved with the upgrade? Is it a complete wipe job or should I install it on a new drive on that PC? The Win 7 machine is 5 years old and the 1TB drive has been pounded with torrents, game installs, MP3 rips, and so on. I would like to plop a new 2TB drive in there to put a new OS on it...

It's an upgrade, not a clean install. With my TP computer I did a clean install of Win8.1 Pro and the immediately applied Win10. I figure for the rest of them if it goes bad for some reason I can just do a fresh install from a flash drive when they publish the Win10 boot iso.

isnt there a trick for doing a clean install with an upgrade key?
like, you install it, don't activate it, and then install it again? i feel like i did this before. both of my W7 keys are upgrade ones and I always do clean installs.

Not a fan of older Win OS upgrades. I think I went from Win 98 to Win ME and that was a clusterf**k. That PC had lots of crashing issues, and I finally did a clean install.
Have they improved the process any?

Left all my computers on, but didn't get the upgrade yet. It's been 7hrs. :\
Anyone get it downloaded and installed yet?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that Windows 10 isn't free?
dodint's thread of IT
It starts at $119 if you want to buy a new license.
For the next year, the upgrade to Win10 is free if you have a valid Win7 or Win8 copy of Windows.
