Yeah, they are moving from Charleston. My brother is sick of the heat and humidity, and the politics. His wife is from Michigan and also doesn't like the weather.
But give them a few years of six months of winter, and they'll be back lol.

It's not even the winter, it's the perpetual suck. Other than a handful of warm, sunny days the past 2+ months has been a neurotic mix of dreary grayness, rain, and snow.

They've both been warned about it. He was 13 when we left, so he doesn't remember it...but I certainly do. No thanks.

Unless you live in San Francisco or Hawaii, you are going to complain about at least one season in the US. It's either too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, too many ternardos, hurricanes, etc.

I can assure you that there is more than one season's worth of weather to complain about in SF.
Also 'too many tornadoes' gave me a chuckle. Like there's a place where you'd be like "You know Martha, I was just thinking: We have the absolute perfect amount of tornadoes here. Not too many, not too few. Life is pretty good."

Charleston -> Pittsburgh is a wise long term move.
For a 20-30 year time horizon, the great lakes area is going to ultimately be the most desirable region of the US (no rising ocean level risk, no drought/wildfire risk, mostly immune to sever storms and tornadoes, just going to keep getting gradually warmer and rainier).

I'll take hot and humid of SC over the trash we get in PA, all day every day.Unless you live in San Francisco or Hawaii, you are going to complain about at least one season in the US. It's either too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, too many ternardos, hurricanes, etc.

My taxes are incredibly cheap though it may be because I live within city limits.Source of the post Might also be marginally cheap r/e tax wise to stay out of Allegheny County.

I'm going through the same seasonal malaise that drove me away from Pittsburgh the first time sixteen years ago. Winter is neat. Summer is nice. But the gray fall and spring is almost too much to endure, literally. Last time I joined the military to get away. Now I think we're just going to buy a beach house.

It's asinine to be honest. Look at the 15 day forecast. Rain like 12/15 days.

I grew up in Economy, which is basically the Beaver County side of Cranberry and Wexford. It's only about a 30 minute drive into Pittsburgh and home prices and taxes are cheaper, but the Ambridge school district is ranked much lower than Seneca Valley and NA and it's about 15+ minutes with traffic to Cranberry as the closest place for something to do.

Never had the season malaise thing until 2-3 years ago. It’s very real. Spring sucks because you’ll get a nice day or two and it will give you this false feeling that the weather is turning and then nope…a week straight of gray and rain. One of these days we are really going to move further south instead of just talking about it. Hard to leave your entire life and family behind though.

This spring has put me full force into moving at some point. Probably in like 10 years because 2.25% interest rate is hard to move away from. Gonna move to Charlotte and become meow's neighbor.

Traffic in the Charlotte area has really grown since I’ve been going on a fairly regular basis over the past 10+ years. My FIL’s commute from just over the SC line to downtown (uptown?) has increased from 20 min to 45 mins.
I think similar things are happening in Austin, Nashville, Charleston. Prices and traffic going up.

Buying in the City is instantly a 2% higher income-tax bill (3% total) versus places like Ross that have a 1% total income tax. For a household income of, say, $80,000 a year, that's $1,600 in extra taxes right off the bat. That would have been roughly two mortgage payments for me.
If they want to regularly drive into the city for meals / entertainment / sports etc., I admit I'm an biased because it's where I live (in Ross), but I would recommend North along the 279/79 corridor, such as Ross, Avonworth, Ben Avon/Ben Avon Heights, Wexford, Franklin Park, or Cranberry. As I told my realtor years ago, "No tunnels; no Route 28.) My commute downtown is 11 miles each way, and of the major arteries into the city, the Parkway North is almost always the least screwed up.
If they really want to be able to walk to stuff and use public transportation, then I echo the recommendations for places like Shadyside, East Liberty, Highland Park, and Squirrel Hill.
If they'd like a more rural environment, then I'd go north of Cranberry and look at Evans City or Zelienople. Quick drive to Cranberry for shopping, and you can still be downtown in something like 30-40 minutes if there isn't much traffic.

Add Myrtle Beach to that list. I can tell you firsthand knowledge of that.Traffic in the Charlotte area has really grown since I’ve been going on a fairly regular basis over the past 10+ years. My FIL’s commute from just over the SC line to downtown (uptown?) has increased from 20 min to 45 mins.

Traffic was always bad May-September for beach season. But the locals are telling me it's worse year round now.
In ten years, 90000 people have moved to Horry County. That's from the Census, so it could be more than that. The house that we're buying - not even in Myrtle Beach proper - is something like $50-70K more than it was a year ago, and pushing six figures pre-COVID.
There is constant road construction, widening and new roads, but it doesn't make a dent. No real public transportation of any sort.

With Myrtle Beach, you also get rednecks from all of the rednecky areas, and they all drive like morons.

I also think it's got more Mustangs per capita than anywhere else in the country.

Something I noticed visiting friends in Monroe is there seemed to be hardly any 4 lane highways. Maybe it was just where we were going but it was all mostly 2 lane road.Traffic in the Charlotte area has really grown since I’ve been going on a fairly regular basis over the past 10+ years.
