POLL: What Affliction Would You NOT Want to Have?
Don't know why I was thinking of this other than the girl that died of Progeria the other day and the local radio station was talking about Alzheimer's, but what is the more insidious of these maladies?
Progeria - You're a kid that ages early, look like you're 105 and you die early.
Alzheimer's - You have some normal life and then you slowly lose your memory, your motor skills and your bodily functions.
Cerebral Palsy - Your brain is sharp as can be, but your body is twisted and you can barely communicate with people.

Allergies would be pretty horrible. I will probably become pretty sad if/when i have to have any kind of maintenance treatment.

I chose Alzheimers, though mostly for personal reasons.
I pride myself on having a good memory, and get frustrated with myself when I know I know something, but can't recall it.
Having to deal with that all the time seems like a nightmare for me.
Personal feelings aside, I would also say Progeria would be terrible. You're basically dead before 20. You can't live your life.

Me as well. I can't think of a more terrible death by affliction than slowly shutting down until you asphyxiate.ALS is my "other" vote.

Mod edit: yeah... if you wanna see it, then go google it, but a picture of a disgusting fetus isn't something that we would like to have on 5AF.

I chose Alzheimer's. Repeated concussions have left me with a terrible short term memory. It's immensely frustrating, and often embarrassing..... I can't even begin to imagine how terrible it would be forgetting who my wife is, or all the great memories we share.

Harlequin-type ichthyosis (also known as "Harlequin baby",[1] Harlequin ichthyosis,[1] ichthyosis congenita,[1] Ichthyosis fetalis, keratosis diffusa fetalis, "Harlequin fetus",[2]:562 and "Ichthyosis congenita gravior"[1]), is a severe genetic skin disease, which causes the dermis to be around 10 times thicker than normal and grow at an exceptionally fast rate. At birth, the child’s whole body is encased in an ‘armour’ of thick white plates of skin, separated with deep cracks. In addition, the eyes, ears, penis, and the appendages may be abnormally contracted. Because of resultant cracked skin in locations where normal skin would fold, it is easily pregnable by bacteria and other contaminants, which can result in serious risk of fatal infection. Constant care is required to moisturise and protect the skin.[3]
The harlequin-type designation comes from the diamond shape of the scales at birth(resembling the costume of Arlecchino), caused by severe hyperkeratosis. The disease can be diagnosed in the uterus by way of fetal skin biopsy or by morphologic analysis of amniotic fluid cells obtained by amniocentesis. Doctors can now usually recognize common features of the disease through ultrasound, and follow up with 3D ultrasound to diagnose the condition.

I'm in the same boat. Several car accidents (including one last June where I rehabbed for six months) and a large number of concussions from playing hockey and skating didn't exactly help my cause.I chose Alzheimer's. Repeated concussions have left me with a terrible short term memory. It's immensely frustrating, and often embarrassing..... I can't even begin to imagine how terrible it would be forgetting who my wife is, or all the great memories we share.
I often lose track of stuff like keys, phone, wallet, paperwork like seconds after I set them down. At least my watch/phone has a "find me" feature, which has been used more than I would like to admit. Ask me to repeat back something as simple as a phone number without paper/pen or notepad? That's not happening.
I imagine it will only get progressively worse as I trek through my 40s.
