DK is saying there's been a decision to possibly cut payroll with a number provided for the 2018 season, but he hasn't been able to corroborate it.

Can't wait to hear it's our fault because of poor attendance.

But they need to boost payroll to make the team more competitive so they get a better TV deal and naming rights for PNC Park.

Right?

Yup, and that's why I posted what I posted earlier this week. I'm not interested in watching a budget baseball team anymore. I'll give it the minimal amount of attention if the fans aren't worth attempting to win for.

What does that even mean? A decision to possibly cut payroll? Seems flimsy, I don't think it's incriminating to make a decision to consider something. I would imagine that trading McCutchen, Cole and Harrison is on the table, which would "cut payroll" but would also be a baseball move to rebuild.

FWIW he said Cutch will be here opening day, Cole is the one I'd imagine would get traded. I'd bet we're going to end up with what we left off with for the most part last year.

If that's the case, I'll probably just tune them out until they go through a full rebuild mode.

What's the point? Imagine watching a TV series, only the plot of every season was the exact same...only the characters are rotated out constantly. Oh, and they're all shtty actors too.

I think people are grossly understating the current levels of parity in baseball.

You would think Pirate fans would have an acute understanding of this in the career arc of McCutchen...you've got it till you don't. Just last year we were ready to anoint the Cubs a dynasty, now they look pretty feeble and have to think about which of their arbitration guys are worth committing to long term, that not being a clear answer highlights their situation. I can say with relative confidence that this top 30 list will look very different in 2018.

The first Pirate shows up at #43 on that list.

Pirates picked up Cutch's option, declined LeBlanc and Stewart. No surprises there.

They should have just announced Bellinger won and gave the rest their parting gifts.

Looks like McCutchen's agents have been pushing stories to ESPN.com. Olney came out with an article saying that the Pirates should trade McCutchen, and Crasnick followed up with a bit about how McCutchen is the most likely 2018-19 FA to be traded this offseason.

First offseason prospect list for the Pirates. The top three is pretty good and there are some breakout candidates there like Lolo and Hearn.

I saw him pitch for the curve this year. He is a big boy, and he still throws hard. I'm a bit surprised he was released....he had decent numbers.

Also, will craig, professional hitter that can't professionally hit, conspiculously absent. Between him and connor joe, it seems pretty apparent that the pirates should just stop using high draft picks on guys with two first names
