Pirates must have really enjoyed the Brady Dragmire experience last year. Sam Moll, who they claimed on Monday, has been lost on waivers to Seattle.

Dear Mr. Ohtani,
You would be a great fit for the Pittsburgh Pirates! We have IC Light, Primanti Bros, pierogi races, and average to above average jokes in the clubhouse.
Yinz (?) will love it here in the 412.
Respectfully,
Trevor Williams

I've seen that Trevor Williams thing posted about 2 dozen times. Is this one of those things where someone just mentions stuff about Pittsburgh so people act like its the greatest ever. I'm surprised Bill Peduto didn't retweet it. (not directed at you, DD)

I was more amused by the "average to above average jokes in the clubhouse" line.

Twitterverse indicating Giants going for Cutch, if they can't get Stanton.

I’ve had multiple The Show franchises where through one way or another Cutch ends up a Giant. It’s inevitable.

28th in runs, 29th in HRs and slugging, but the new assistant pitching coach is the key to future success. This **** franchise. Also nice to see them sit on their hands and hang onto their $2.2 million in international bonus pool money while other teams snag the prospects removed from the Braves.@BiertempfelTrib
Former MLB exec told me #Pirates offseason plan/in-season success hinges on pitching staff taking next step. In that case, it's not outrageous to think the team's most important addition this winter might be asst pitch coach Justin Meccage.

Hitting is expensive, plain and simple. Reclamation project pitchers are cheap.

One could take that to mean whatever moves they are making will be on the offensive side of the team and that the pitching will have to improve from within. They're also supposedly the front-runners for Jamie Garcia.
Their approach is a little puzzling and I think the most frustrating part is their miscalculation for maintaining success. I think all ML teams recognize that the first step for competing is boosting the farm system by either selling players, tanking for the top pick or splurging on international free agents. The Pirates did the tanking and were able to make a three year run. The farm system was very strong after the 2015 season, they had Glasnow, Taillon, Bell and Meadows all in the upper levels. The calculation was clearly that the additions needed to boost the WC team to a WS team would come internally. That's not how prospects should be broken in to the majors and it's tough to generate that sort of marginal improvement. You either need to spend money or leverage the farm system for established major leaguers. They did neither and now have themselves in a position where they need home grown guys to reach levels of performance that are likely a stretch all while dealing with decline from the established major leaguers that are under contract.
At this point I think they're setting themselves to be major sellers at the deadline.

Very good for Cutch. Bad for Pirates fans who believe the lies of management and ownership.
