Pitt v. Penn State - GDT - Game 2 - September 9, 2017

Postby slappybrown » Sun Sep 03, 2017 10:45 am

This Saturday at Beaver Stadium in "Happy" Valley, the University of Pittsburgh Super Panthers football team will play a game of American football against the Nittany Lions of Pennsylvania State University - State College Branch (commonly referred to by their alumni, fans, and supporters as "UPS").

These teams have played 97 times; they are each other's most common opponent by a fair sight. UPS leads the series overall, 50-43-4. The current streak is in Pitt's favor, having won each of the last two meetings. The most recent meeting ended like this:

Both teams would go on to have successes after that game. Pitt beat the eventual national champion on the road, while UPS went on a run to the B10 championship game and a Rose Bowl appearance.

The UPS student body is singing Pitt songs during classes and appear to "care about Pitt" (please note that garbage cans are used as desks at UPS and many classes are held outside due to UPS' storied tradition as the premier Dirt and Turd Studies program in the country):

Yesterday's results would certainly suggest that UPS is likely to hold serve and even up this mini-series of 4 games at one apiece.

5AF's official in-game correspondent and sideline reporter this year will be @mac5155 and we look forward to his live updates until he becomes an alcohol soaked sponge in the stands (have fun and be safe mac!).

Enjoy the game nerds and may this game someday be played year after year the day after Thanksgiving as God intended it.
I would never put a red cent on this game and expect the worst, but I cannot in good conscience pick UPS, so.....Pitt 45 UPS 44

Gonna go 48-17, Lions. Barkley will have at least 200-250 combined yards.

Great start.

Pitt needed (and created) their own luck last year. Improbable that will happen again.

It was 19 back in May but I suspect it's 21-23 today when it comes out.

After yesterdays debacle I have little faith. With that said 44-0 Pitt.

F PSU!

Let's just talk actual football - I've given my prediction and will try to reserve any further trash talking for after the game. I watch Pitt from time to time and have Pitt friends so I think I can kinda break it down.

Interesting spread. I think I recall the Pitt-Clemson game being around that, too.

Thing is, Pitt had a much better offense last year to the point that they could hang with anyone. Now? Lost their OC, QB, RB, 2 key linemen, TE, FB who was a big part of the offense is injured... yea that's not good. That's why I kinda laugh at all the Pitt talk about being "vanilla" and "holding it for PSU" yesterday. If anything, maybe we should watch for more creative plays with Henderson and some shots to Weah, but there's no way we'll be caught off guard like we were in the beginning of the game last year. They don't really have any other big threats. I know that RB Ollison had a good year when Conner was injured so maybe he could be good, but they'll likely be playing from behind and I just don't see him being a huge factor. And our D will be much better.

Fact of the matter is they're going to have a hell of a time trying to prevent PSU from scoring every time they have the ball, so their best defense is a good offense. And I don't think it's good enough to cover a 19-23ish pt spread, so I'd go PSU.

Pitt's secondary is going to get torched, but I think they can do some damage on offense.

If you're the Pitt defense...or any defense, for that matter...what do you key on?

The run.

Barkley can still beat even if you focus on him, but I would rather sell out to stop him and take my chances with McSorley. I don't think you have any other option.

None of these options are appealing.

Barkley is a terrific RB. If you can do damage control on him and make the other guys beat you, you have a chance...Barkley could win this game himself if given free reign...

Whatever happens, I love you all. And that has nothing to do with the fact I'm working on a 20 Oz gin and tonic under a beach umbrella.

Even if the Lions win, it is too bad there is no rubber match next year.

That was cute. Will be a fun week.

I look at it this way. Franklin doesn't mess around and doesn't exactly forget last year, along with all the cheap subtle jabs on the recruiting trail (which he is absolutely dominating, btw) by Narduzzi. You're gonna see firsthand we win more than just recruiting and attendance battles - you're gonna see the difference between a program on its way back to being a perennial powerhouse in college football, and a program whose ceiling is winning 6-8 games a year and trying to play spoiler.

Gonna go 48-17, Lions. Barkley will have at least 200-250 combined yards.
You could have made this same exact post on 9/3/2016.

Foolish if you don't recognize the differences between last year and this year. Heck, Pitt was favored last year, and for good reason. We were pretty unproven at the time.

Now though, we literally have the advantage at every position on the field.

I'm just being real... waiting for anyone to give me some kind of reason for how Pitt covers the spread. Only way I could see it is if Barkley gets injured, but even then... our passing game will dominate too.
