at what point do you become close enough with a person that they can only refer to you by your last name? This guy at work refers to everyone by their last name. I do not like it.
Is/was this guy an athlete?
Or coach / gym teacher?

People have always called me by my last name, shortening it to "Shaf". I guess some last names are more prone to being made into nicknames, so it's pretty much stuck since HS.

I surprisingly never got called by my last name all that much. You'd think people would call me Ferrari but it is what it is.

dude is like at least in his 50s, so if he was an athlete and or in the military, it was at least 3 decades ago

In high school I was identified in social settings almost exclusively by my first and last name said together. I don't know why.

Ah you're one of those! There are certain people in this world that are referred to by first and last name, it's a rarity, in all settings. I find it so interesting. I have one friend like that. My dad has one friend like that. It just doesn't come up very often, but I enjoy pointing it out...

I’m one of those too, since my early 20s. I’m kind of fond of it, to be honest.

I know a few first name last name guys, but all of them have only one syllable for each name.

I had teachers who thought my first name was actually Randall. That's what you get when you have 2 first names ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm 2 syllables for both. It makes no sense.

Thank You notes for baby shower gifts are expected, yes or no?

This came up over Christmas. My wife was a bit miffed that she didn't get a thank you note from my cousins wife for her baby shower back in September. My Mom says that it's not a thing anymore and my wife is trapped between shifting generational norms here. My wife does skew old/traditional on stuff like that but my position is that if you have a non-annual by-invitation event that solicits gifts (baby shower, wedding, etc) then you are expected to send out thank you notes.

Yay/Nay?

We got two baby shower gifts this year and got cards for both.

I can't imagine not sending a thank you card.

yeah, maybe I'm old school but any kind of wedding/baby/graduation gift (hell, that could be one gift in some places) should be acknowledged with a Thank You card. anything else seems ungrateful to me.

Yes, thank you cards should be the norm for baby and bridal showers.

Yeah, I know I spent a lot of time on my wedding thank you cards and my mom told me that her neighbors and family that sent gifts reached out to her after to say how touched they were by the thank you card.

Charging your 18 year-old rent to continue living in your house (like my ex and her husband are doing to my daughter).

Between the two of them they have to be pulling in $150K a year.

Not even sure that matters. There are other ways to instill the idea of responsibility on the kid besides slapping them with a rent payment.
