Yes, that is a big faux pas. As the pot of coffee progresses, the water dripping down becomes gradually weaker as more and more water runs through the grounds. By sticking your cup under there early in the cycle, you are making the coffee unbalanced on the weak side for people. Later in the cycle, it makes it unbalanced on the strong side.

That said, most office coffee pots aren't properly measuring coffee anyway, so the real issue with it is that if everyone else waits, why shouldn't you?

If this is true, wouldn't the person taking the first cup get the weaker coffee, and the last the stronger coffee? So in essence, placing your cup in the path of the pot is just skipping ahead? I don't see people at the coffee maker stirring the pot to even it out.

The bigger question is, shouldn't everybody stop messing around with their coffee and just buy a Ffrench press already?

False. The first water that comes out, is coming through completely untapped beans. Hence, it would be the strongest...that's why the coffee smell is so strong in your house right when it first starts brewing. And the pot mixes as the water comes in. The heat on the bottom also circulates it.

when you stick ur mug under there instead of the pot, what do you do? fill up the machine and sit there waiting for the mug to fill, then replace it with the pot?

I live alone, and none of my friends or family would ever enter my home without telling me first. Anything that makes entry to my home is eating buckshot from a 12 gauge shotgun. I probably wouldn't notice it's an alien until afterwards.
