Smell is usually a good indicator, but I also don't mess with chicken after the sell by date.

Sell by is not an expiration. I would not worry about it.

Yeah, the OJ didn't scare me. I don't know why poultry does, ha. I'll try to get someone else to do a sniff test.

If I have a doubt, I don't do it. I'll think about it while I'm eating it and weird myself out...

Those dates aren't even that accurate. Smell is the indicator. And texture. But if it's slimy you're probably going to notice a smell as well.

Booked an AirBnB; a condo at a ski resort in WV. It's something like $140/night for three nights. There is a $101 cleaning fee. After booking and prepaying all of it, I get a Welcome Letter that states they'll charge a retroactive security deposit (AirBnB won't allow them to tack on a security deposit ahead of time) saying they'll charge us for a security deposit up to $200 unless we do the following at check-out:
Load all dirty dishes and start dishwasher.
Do not strip the beds before you leave, just leave them unmade.
Leave all used towels in the bathtub for easy counting by the cleaning crew.
Find and place all TV remotes by each TV.
In the winter, lower all thermostats to 65 degrees, or in the summer, turn off air conditioner.
Check all rooms for personal items that may have been left behind.
Take garbage out to the dumpsters behind the stone sign and place a new garbage bag in
trash cans. (Be sure to close the lid(s) on the dumpster to keep animals out)
We have to fill out that checklist, leave it for the cleaning crew to verify, and then also take a picture of it with our phone and send it to the owner.
My specific question is: If you pay $101 for a cleaning fee and there is an actual cleaning crew coming, is it unreasonable to demand that I take the garbage down three flights of stairs and out to a dumpster?
My general observation is: Honestly, go **** yourself.
If it were a rustic cabin or some kind of shared space I would be okay with it. But it's a vacation condo. If they were not charging a triple-digit cleaning fee I would be more open to doing it. This is my vacation. When I wake up on the last day I'm not looking to complete a chore list. We're neat and clean people and leave rentals in really good condition, and would have done most of the stuff on the list anyway as a courtesy. But the trash thing, while putting their hands out with an out of proportion cleaning fee, really strikes me as being very arrogant. The weird thing is it's the second time in a row I've seen this. Both times were in West Virginia, renting full condos/houses, with a cleaning fee, with a cleaning crew, on AirBnB.

The trash thing is a little weird with the cleaning fee. Not sure I've seen that before.
Also weird: not stripping the beds. I guess so they can make sure the sheet set is complete?

In covid times, I give the benefit of the doubt that the cleaning fee is like disinfecting the place...I think taking garbage out falls under common courtesy, even if the dumpster is at the end of the driveway or whatever...I don't know, it's a little bit close, but I don't think I have a problem with the request here...
Even if you don't give the benefit of the doubt of the first sentence, this is akin to old (still?) eBay ways of selling a $200 product for $80 but charging $40 shipping as a means of making up for your own seller's remorse...they found an in to strip you of a dime reasonably, so they did...

To your benefit of the doubt:
Cleaning fee of $101.00 includes a one-time linen-towel setup, paper products, dish towels, dishwasher detergent and clean up service after departing.
It's housekeeping. Part of housekeeping is changing out trash bags and disposing of the trash.
I'll say, if I *filled* a trash can to capacity I'd happily take it out. Taking it out solely to save the cleaning crew a trip? No.

I've never rented through Airbnb. Are you aware of those conditions before booking?

No. After booking I received a message from the owner on AirBnB asking for my personal e-mail so they could send some information. They sent two e-mails. The first being a rental agreement (a bit late, no?) and the second being a 'Welcome Letter' with the checklist above.
This is a ski resort, not someone renting out their basement. They have a direct rental portal on their website but also list their units on AirBnB/VRBO.
This happened at a completely different place on Memorial Day weekend and it was just written on a sign in the kitchen. That's the only two times I've ever seen that request before which is why I'm wondering if IATA here or what because it feels like a completely outsized request.

Most likely these people have multiple rentals and hire one person/company to do all the cleaning. If they had to take out the trash, change the thermostat, etc. they would have to hire another crew. Making this list is a way to make things more efficient for them.
Their mistake was not including it in the original AirBnB posting. To me it's a way for you to opt out of the agreement, as you didn't agree to the conditions when you clicked the send button.

The asks aren't the slightest bit onerous imo, but they should've been disclosed prior to transacting. They're changing the terms of the agreement.

Depends...
You driving back roads and threw it into a field? No.
Diving downtown and onto a sidewalk? Yes.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it littering, but one can most certainly keep the apple core in the car until you are near a trash can.

Yeah I mean as a yes or no answer, I would say no. But I wouldn't say it isn't frowned upon or distasteful or lazy

Yes, littering, anywhere. Same for banana peels, orange peels, etc. Take your trash home and throw it away in garbage bags or compost it.
