Wow, just 3% is pretty sweet...

I'm in on a lot of higher risk stuff (shocker), so that volatility has probably contributed to my downslide. But the rate of return early on was probably uncommon too...I guess it's basically like my rent situation haha

The year by year outlook of my 401k makes the recent dip not as impactful:

2019: +31.1%
2020: +18.4%
2021: +27.9%
2022: :face:
Yeah, it does ease the pain.

74% Lifecycle 2050 fund
15% stocks (fund that mirrors S&P 500)
11% small cap fund

I'm not sure why it's doing okay, honestly.

Investigating rolling over my old 403b, and they're telling me that I may have to have my wife sign documents in front of a notary for something... dafuq.

Yep, when I had to rollover from previous to current employer (even though I'm in the state pension system, the retirement accounts are my slush fund), I had to get the change notarized.

I'm trying to come up with reasons to leave the money in this account (good funds, low ER), but am having trouble.

Just started the rollover to my new 401k (they cut the check within hours). It's been real, TIAA.

At least you won't lose any money for about a day or two.

Let's be honest, it would be better right now for the market to drop slightly so that I buy in at a lower share price.

Bought a couple of TSLA shorts yesterday, TSLA is down more than 5% at last check. Wouldn't mind if the bottom fell out of that by 3 pm today...

It just might, with all those Teslas stuck on the interstate in Florida. *tsk tsk*

Go back even farther. Every single one of us elder millennial in our 30s and 40s have sucked on the Fed's low interest rate teet for the vast majority or our working years.

I declare no one is allowed on 5af is allowed to complain about the their 401k decline. We are all spoiled by the Fed

I don't pretend to know anything about what the Fed does, and your point is well taken, but the complete disappearance of pensions in the workplace kind of makes it important that our 401k's mature very well.

Source of the post but the complete disappearance of pensions in the workplace kind of makes it important that our 401k's mature very well.
Which is why I have always tried to opt out of pensions and manage my own retirement funds.

Looks like my rollover timing is going to work out in my favor - didn't get out at the low, but will be buying back in even lower.

I started my 403b rollover last Wednesday, and the process completed this morning. That was considerably faster than I was expecting.

Rollovers should be fast if both parties aren't incompetent. The problem is the stars aligning and having it hit on both ends.

When I moved over a state retirement from North Carolina into my own a decade ago, it was surprisingly uneventful.

lol, dividends for my matching account at the old 403b hit the day after rollover. Now I get to call them and ask what I can do about it. If they need another notarized letter to rollover, I'll just let that $4 sit there for eternity.

I'd leave the $4 in there and then make that my first retirement withdraw.

As it tends to be. Plus, no where to go but up after that September. I bought in several thousand dollars on 9/30 and 10/3, as a lot of good entry points presented themselves...$QQQ being chiefly among them. BTC a little bit too. It will possibly dip again to the low 10s, but it has a shot of getting back to the $28k - $43k area...

Good time to grow some fluid cash short term...at least...

I've been slamming debt hard instead of the market. It's good for both my mental and financial health.
