I feel like 6.25% is a conservative estimate there.

I think we're getting more accurate but still on the conservative side.

if you were to tell me that it would get to 6.25% based on oil and gas fallout alone, i'd say yes, probably. but for the economy as a whole? gotta be higher.

Know nothing question: So, I've upped my retirement contributions now that I feel like the market is pretty close to bottoming out. There's a thing to pick which index funds and vanguard this and that that I can move my money to...I've done this before and had a really nice 2019, but is there anything in particular that I can take advantage of in this downturn that will pay dividends later on...?

generally speaking, small cap stocks tend to get their fudge packed in downturns and tend to beat the market in general during good times. so perhaps you can see if you have any small cap funds available

I upped my contributions and have them going 100% to large cap. I think with the economy yet to feel the impact of unemployment growth, the floor is a ways away.

I will third the sentiment that the floor is a ways away

The market as a whole still doesn't know how the coronavirus is going to impact the economy. It is going to take a week or so until we really get a feel for the growth of the virus and if this is going to be a winter or a blizzard. Until the market finds out how long of a haul this is going to be, there is no way to know what the floor will be

Fair enough, but as someone who is in his first 3-5 years of retirement planning, this doesn't seem like a bad place in the market trajectory to boost up for, say, maybe the remainder of the year, catch this pretty harsh downturn and then pull back contributions as the upswing occurs, right? I'm a long, long way off and not trying to turn a quick buck...I'm just trying to lay a nicer base for compounding purposes down the line...

As long as you can gut out some unpleasantries in the short term (which based on your general demeanor, you will gut them out) this will indeed lay a nicer base assuming the economy doesn't implode completely and we are all out of jobs.

Perfect. Yeah, to me, this is all funny money...I don't know if it exists or not...I know I can't touch it or do much about it, I'm content with that...I just figure while things are bad, buy low...and I easily spend 8% of my paycheck every weekend gallivanting around town - that has been cancelled for the foreseeable future, so, whatever...I'll up my contribution 8 percentage points and hope for the best if I live long enough to use this money down the line...
