I never thought I would get past 55 either mikey. My dad had his first heart attack at 48 and I didn't do the smartest stuff when younger. But now that I am in my 70s I am glad I had a 401K and IRA. They have made my retirement quite OK.

Hmph, fair enough...my dad lived 80 years in his first 35 probably based on what I know about his life and he's still going in his late 50's despite - on numerous occasions - medical professionals stated that he would die if he left the hospital without treatment for all that ails him now...but he's still going...so maybe we're more death resistant than meets the eye...

All right, I'll continue to give some of my paycheck to future me...probably a good way to keep me in (kind of) check anyhow...

37 in May.

I can't wait to be able to go "in a row?" for a whole year.
Hopefully your wife will get the joke. Mine just looked at me funny.

On a serious note, it's worth taking an honest look at all of this. I have no intention of working myself to death, and want a comfortable retirement. That's my top goal, outside of my family.

She does, well sorta. She rolls her eyes at me, but she knows what it's from. The first thing she said was "I have to hear "in a row" for a whole year don't I? "

Explain like I’m five what AA is.
Asset allocation - ratio of stocks to bonds. The younger you are, the more aggressive you should be to build your portfolio, so weighted much heavier towards equities. My AA is roughly 87% equities/13% bonds, for instance. Tomas will tell me in a few days that I should just ditch some of the bonds. :)

I am about to turn 50, and so I am STARTING to think about bonds. As I posted numerous times before, never in the history of US markets since 1928 - so we DO include the Great Depression - stocks underperformed government bonds for any of the 25-year or longer horizons. And it happened only ONCE (1929-1948) out of 70 possible 20-year horizons ending by 2016.

If my calculations are right, stock undeperformed bonds in 9 out of 75 15-year horizons, and in 13 out of 80 10-year horizons, so going to at least some bonds is probably a wise idea as you are really nearing the retirement age...

So what are your plans as you get older? Will you actually glide to a specific AA by your age of retirement?

I'll go here:
http://people.stern.nyu.edu/adamodar/Ne ... rrent.html

,download the "Historical returns..." spreadsheet, and will play with stock vs bonds weights so that I am able to reduce the incidence of negative and very low returns of the resulting portfolio over 15 and 10 year horizons. I still expect to end up with greater stock weights than the typical "target date funds".

Most of the VG TDFs wind up in the area of 30/70. My original target was 50/50, though my current path is 52/48. I may go a little heavier on equities since my wife's got the conservative side handled with VTTHX, but I don't think I could do go your route with 100% equities.

Finally had to rebalance my 403b this year, and in the process noticed that my wife's 403b was wrong in my retirement estimation spreadsheet. So instead of being ahead of the game by $60k, we're actually closer to $100k ahead of schedule. That just about knocks a year off our retirement date.

Could be 2 or 3 if you'd get your pansy ass out of bonds. :pop:

Got a little bit angry at California 529 plan today when I learned 15 minutes before exchange closing that over the weekend, they erased all usernames/passwords - and so all account holders have to re-register for internet access...

Immediately forgave them once I learned that they lowered fund fees again - this time to 0.06% for stock indices!! :thumb:

We were given some cash around this time last year by my wife’s aunt, and I nearly said f it, let’s play with Monopoly money and put it into Tesla. We went to Disney and had a patio built instead.

I’ve never been interested in playing the stock market outside of index funds. I obviously regret not getting into Google or Apple early on, but that’s about it.

So all those holding the March TSLA calls with strike equal to $1,000 are currently losing 75% of the value they held yesterday! :scared:
