I went as far as to create a spreadsheet with my target, assumptions, etc. I compare how I'm doing at the end of each year, and also use it to adjust my asset allocation over time. It has come in handy, IMO. I still have a ways to go, but I've got 9.25% more saved up than I planned for. None of this includes my wife's pension, either, which is nice.

Two income family in professional jobs, $1MM 401k by 40 is very achievable.

whew, I thought I was doing good with $100k by 30.. I think my wife has about $25k.

100k at 30 is very good imo and 1mil by 40 isnt out of reach for 2 if you're already at 100k

It's still just an arbitrary number. You may need more than that by 40 depending on your lifestyle and/or goals.

It’s all arbitrary for a 40 year old as you really have no idea what it is going to cost you to live 20+ years later.

yeah that at 40 would not cut it if you're planning on having kids that's for sure

Are you assuming the person quits investing at 40? Following that same path until 50 and then no longer contributing would turn a nest-egg into $10MM+ by 65, assuming a realistic 8% annually.yeah that at 40 would not cut it if you're planning on having kids that's for sure

i meant as to retire at 40 and make it off 1 mil. $1 mil at 40 and working until 50 would be fantastic

$1 mil by 40? I am way behind then, probably only 1/3 of the way there.
I did something similar to NTP66 - projected my expenses at retirement, figured in inflation, and went from there. You also have to figure you'll still be getting 2-3% interest on your investment of whatever you don't take out so it'll continue to grow into retirement.
My wife and I will have something a little north of $4m when we retire which I think is plenty.

Yeah, retiring at 40 with $1MM wouldn’t leave one with much more than a pot to piss in.

My daughter's 529 finished 2019 with a 30.19% rate of return, while my 403b squeaked by at 26.6%. Nice.

Both of my 401k's ended above the 30% mark. I moved my kids' accounts over to the NY529 last January, so I'll have to wait to see what their yearly earnings were.
