Tax gurus:

Possible plan for 2018 is withdraw $40,000 from Roth for House payment. Is my understanding correct:

1. No penalty on first $10,000
2. 10% penalty on remainder

I think if both you and your wife have an Roth IRA then you can withdraw 20k without penalty.

Bitcoin has rebounded back up to around $15k. I saw one analysis that it could go as high as $60k before the crash.

In 2007, Warren Buffett bet a million dollars that an index fund would outperform a collection of hedge funds over the course of 10 years. This week he won that bet, but the big winner in the wager is a charity called Girls Inc

So is it stupid that I sweep $500 a month into a savings account, instead of doing something more aggressive with it? I'm already doing 7% matching contributions to a 403B and $200 towards a Roth IRA. The savings account is for easy access to cash for things like emergency repairs (HVAC, roof, new refrigerator etc.) and substantial downpayment on a car etc. Is there something with a higher yield but minimal penalties for withdrawal?

a. The general rule is that you should have 6 to 12 months (depending on who you ask) of expenses saved in an emergency fund. Since I am a lazy bum and don't budget expenses, I just tell myself that no matter what, I should have at least 6 months of net paychecks in a savings account and the rest is fair game for whatever.

b. it never hurts to save more into retirement.

c. What rate are you getting on the $500/mo savings account

Was going to post the same link. What's the interest rate on your savings account? I use Marcus as my main savings account, which has raised its rates three times in the last four months, currently sitting at 1.5%.
