Yeah, there's good and bad pasta, but it's only as good as it's sauce or filling
This is the take of a man who has no earthly conception of proper pasta cookery.

The sauce is secondary. If you think otherwise, you are doing the whole thing wrong.

Uncle Roger says if you bought a rice cooker, your rice would be better.
Said it in the food/cooking thread, but I think it'd be pretty hysterical if Uncle Roger was actually "Tim, from Leeds" doing a Martin Yan impression.
He’s a dude named Nigel from London doing a Martin Yan impression.

Rice is only as good as whatever you mix it with.
Same could be said for pasta: Yeah, there's good and bad pasta, but it's only as good as it's sauce or filling
Potatoes are only as good as the cooking procedure. A baked potato or boiled potato on it's own isn't all that good. You need to add things to make them good.
I would eat pasta with just a little butter or olive oil and garlic. Won’t do that with rice. I need a rich, hearty something with rice.

I’ll eat rice with a hit of soy sauce.

I agree a touch of olive oil, garlic and salt is all pasta really needs, but just pasta out of the boil, onto a plate with nothing else? Pass.

I won’t even bother to respond to tif’s nonsense.

I made homemade pasta once. I’d eat that solo.

You’d take it right out of the water, into a bowl and just eat it with absolutely nothing else?

Yeah. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer a sauce or something, but I’d eat pasta plain if it’s well made.

Rice just has a slight flavor I don’t like so much.

Alright. If you’re cool with pasta and nothing else but not the same with rice, yup. Unpopular.

Nonsense? The dish is 'pasta'. Not 'sauce'.

We're not talking about completely bone dry pasta straight out of the water. But if you're relying on the condiment to make your pasta delicious, you're doing it wrong.

The opinion was that he didn’t like rice plain. I said the same can be said about pasta. We most certainly are talking about the pasta straight out of the water.

Btw. Same for oats. My point is: no grain is good by itself with nothing else other than possibly wheat for bread, but even then you need the yeast to provide the flavors and salt to make it pop.

I made rotini one time (is that the curly one?) and didn't realize until afterwards that I was out of sauce...so in a pinch, I hit it with some soy sauce and it actually didn't suck...I never went back to it, but it wasn't the worst thing I've ever done in a kitchen...

Right. Pasta is an ingredient, not a dish. You can eat ingredients all day if you want but that's the exception.

Does this change the taste of the rice?
