:thumb:

I know this isn't a direct comparison, but I went to a Chinese restaurant a couple of years ago and literally watched a woman stand up and bow (palms together, Asian style) to her waiter. Stereotypical white woman. The waiter looked flabbergasted.

I'll leave it to the reader as to why this discussion reminded me of that.

I can pick up single grains of rice with my chopsticks, so he’s not wrong.

Re: chopsticks.

Not obsolete. One significant factor is that disposable chopsticks can be made from renewable resources, such as bamboo. That matters when you have heavily populated countries that run though literally millions of pairs of them every day. Single-use forks and spoons are almost always made of plastic. Chopsticks are also easier to pack and carry if you want to bring your own.

Bit of a strawman here. I do not use plastic utensils.

How many chopsticks will you go through before my metal fork wears out?

Chopsticks suck. Rice (other than crisped) also sucks.

I've disliked it since I was a child. The taste, the consistency, it actually makes me a little nauseous just thinking about it.

I have 3 sets of chopsticks. One plastic, one bone, and one metal. I prefer the bone set.

I know. Mrs K has had me try a few over the years. I don't know why, I just really don't like it. I will eat it, rarely, but I'd never order or make any myself. For recipes like jambalya or risotto, I use orzo instead.

He's right.

As a source of starch, I eat rice more than I eat potatoes. I pretty much always keep a supply on hand of short-grain Japonica rice and a long-grain variety, usually Jasmine or Basmati.

Why aren't you eating rice, mikey? Philly out of it? Low carb?

I've eaten brown rice for years, and just discovered brown jasmine rice...which is pretty great, when I can get it in BFE. I do like regular jasmine rice though...so good.

Same could be said for pasta: Yeah, there's good and bad pasta, but it's only as good as it's sauce or filling
Potatoes are only as good as the cooking procedure. A baked potato or boiled potato on it's own isn't all that good. You need to add things to make them good.

I love brown rice with a little bit of butter and salt. You don't need anything else with it, although now that winter is coming, we like to make some of those homey meals (baked chicken in cream of mushroom soup or something, etc.), and that's great to pour over rice too.

Uncle Roger says if you bought a rice cooker, your rice would be better.
Said it in the food/cooking thread, but I think it'd be pretty hysterical if Uncle Roger was actually "Tim, from Leeds" doing a Martin Yan impression.
