Chili is not soup.
I can see it being a stew rather than soup, but it certainly falls in the same family.

What is your definition of a soup?
A distinct broth? Chili broth is...???
Tomato based and typically beef.

Soup is a binary state. It either is or is not. Nothing is soupish.
Define soup or gtfo.

Soup is like obscenity; you'll know it when you see it.

Chili ain't it.

That wouldn't be a bad test, honestly.

No way you could flush chili, with no water, using a standard toilet. But you could flush a soup.

Yeah. That’s pretty god damn distinct.

Where would you find chili on the menu? If you asked what the soup was, would you expect them to say chili if they have it?

So dodint’s opinion is that it’s too thick to be soup based on his toilet comment. I’ve had thick and thin (flushable) chili before, so I’m not sure where he’s going with that.

Shmenguin’s opinion is that there has to be a distinct broth (whatever the f*ck that means) to be soup? So any blended soup such as tomato or pea soup is not soup?

Chili is not soup. I understand it might sometimes be identified as “soup” on a menu, but I think that’s only because it’s eaten with a spoon and prepared and stored in the same vessel as a soup. However, someone wouldn’t take a bowl of chili, tilt it to their mouth, and slurp the broth like one might a soup.

Those blended soups are broths. You taste the liquidyness and you have some sort of reaction. Whereas Chili is a bunch of solids with a little bit of water added. And it’s meant to be primarily chewed. The quality of the liquid vessel is completely arbitrary.

I am perfectly aware of how poorly written that paragraph is. But it’s like convincing someone that the sky is blue. If “it just is” doesn’t work, plan B is gonna be some baffling ****.

My mother picked up a chili recipe when she and my dad lived in New Mexico in the last 50's and it was very soup like with a broth unlike the chili you get in a can.

Just confirming...I may not have had chili more than twice in my life and I think I was under the age of 12 each time...and it's highly likely that I will never eat it again...so the memories are fuzzy...but I recall it being smashed up meat with some beans in it that weren't very good...it's not soup, it's just meat smashings...
