Don’t pretend like you magically have no idea what chili is.
Just confirming...I may not have had chili more than twice in my life and I think I was under the age of 12 each time...and it's highly likely that I will never eat it again...so the memories are fuzzy...but I recall it being smashed up meat with some beans in it that weren't very good...it's not soup, it's just meat smashings...
I’ll fix you up a batch of my prize winning chili. No beans.

I’m hoping that this doesn’t make Tif go into some boring tirade about food science but broth is made from like, animal bones and such while chili’s base is made from tomatoes getting all smashed up and liquified or however you want to call it

Also, mikey has jumped the shark with his “i dont know what (insert something everyone would know) schtick” with this feeble assed attempt to try and explain why he doesn’t know what chili is

Yeah, tomato soup is not soup. Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, tomato soup is not soup. Thanks for the clarification.

Soup mainly uses a broth whether it is animal or vegetable, so tomato soup uses vegetable or chicken broth usually. That classifies it as a soup.

If Bania had ordered chili at Mendy's, would that have been considered a meal?

I would say that chili is not a soup. A soup, to me, is a dish where the bits of solid food, whether meat or vegetable, are suspended in, and cooked at least partially if not totally in, a liquid that has been separately prepared, such as broth, stock, dashi, miso, etc. It can also just be the prepared liquid itself, such as tomato soup. A stew is just thicker/chunkier soup. But for either, the point is to prepare a liquid and then add ingredients the prepared liquid. Even though chili can (depending on the recipe) contain a lot of fluid, the point of the dish is not ingredients cooked in or served in a prepared liquid, so I would say chili is not soup. Not even Cincinnati chili, which is definitely on the runny side.

My fault, folks.

If the spectrum that includes tif at one end and mikey on the other agree with me, the opinion doesn't qualify as Unpopular as per the requirements for filing in this thread.

Who doesn't like some chili soup on their hotdogs sandwich, basically the mecca of mikey cuisine.

"Chili is a totally different product. It's a mixture of ground meat, beans, a meat broth," says celebrity super-chef Chris Cosentino of San Francisco's Cockscomb and Portland, Oregon's Jackrabbit. "Definition here: 'chili: a spicy dish made of ground beef, hot peppers or chili powder, and usually beans.' They are totally different."

Fellow Top Chef alum BJ Smith of Portland's Smokehouse Restaurants, followed a similar argument and made a strong case for chili as neither soup nor stew. "Chili is its own thing and should almost be its own food group!" Smith says. "Sure either is a great utilization of products, but you can't bring soup to a chili contest or put it on a hot dog."

Sarah Schafer of Portland's Irving Street Kitchen says that calling chili a soup is a surefire way to mess with Texas, which we generally are advised not to do. "Chili should be thick and filled with meat, no beans and lots of cheese and white onions!! If it's brothy, and watery it's ruined," Schafer says. "Common misconception but don't even try to tell a Texan that it has beans, it will get ugly."

To clarify: If you have made a big pot of jambalaya, and you take a look at it and feel like you should classify it as either soup or stew (we're not even going to include chili in this reckoning, because oh dear....), but are finding it difficult to make up your mind as to which, you have made some truly terrible decisions in your life, and you should probably sit out a few plays.

You're probably right, but I've heard it labeled as a soup and a stew. I just label it delicious.

I think I'd call jambalaya a pilaf, or at least place it in the general pilaf/plov/pilau/etc. family.
