Turns out the local sheriff was called 20 times about the shooter.

I'm not touching FB convos on this with a 10 foot stick. The entirety of my FB feed is "THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T LET GOD IN SCHOOL!"

I think there is something to be said for the fact all these shootings happen in the suburbs. The weapons capable of this kind of destruction have been around for a long time, they just "look" scarier now. So what has changed to make this happen more regularly? Primarily the one common denominator is that each one of the perpetrators came from a broken home, some with no father at all. All lack any kind of moral framework, which regardless of one's views on the "right" version of that (and I obviously have an opinion ;) ), they all inculcate in the recipient a basic understanding of right and wrong. You had boys with no ethical oversight, overstimulated with violence in media/entertainment, and a deep resentment that have no way to process and it is a powderkeg. You add a soulless and anti-community suburb to that, it just raises it even further.

The whole Thomas Dewey/Horace Mann mechanized schooling concept is not good for the mental health of kids, especially of boys.

My MiL is very Republican, and I physically cringe at some of the memes/comics she shares. I love her to death, and she's the nicest MiL a dude could ever ask for, but man...

In the general obviously I wouldn't disagree with that.

However in this specific case a lack of any moral framework in the boy's life most certainly contributed to his nihilistic Nietzschian worldview.

I certainly agree that lack of guidance is likely an issue. I don't have any of the data nor intimate knowledge of each shooting that's happened since Columbine, so I can't comment one way or another on your claims.

No offense, but by default anybody who would take another’s life without an immediate threat on their own is either lacking a moral compass or has one that is severely askew to most of civilization. That in itself isn’t a revelation, whether they’re not getting it at school or home, or as an adult.

Did you read Sebastian jungers book tribe?

I think there are some similar concepts explored in that book

I was discussing this with my boss. The shooters always get covered so in-depth. I can name the Las Vegas shooter, what he did for a living, his hobbies, know that he had a girlfriend in the Phillipines during the attack, that he wired her tens of thousands of dollars, etc. I can't name one of the 58 people, or a single detail about their lives.

Because pressuring news outlets to change is more within people’s reach than asking certain type of people to join us in society.
