I think it was the movie Syriana that demonstrated this pretty well. Migrant workers in the middle east toiling in what's effectively dangerous slave labor with no purpose or joy in their lives. While I liked Syriana very much, that's not really an accurate representation of the run-of-the-mill Islamic extremist moved to violence. By and large, they tend to be well-educated coming from fairly well-off families with the means to send their kids to higher schooling overseas, which tends to be where these people become radicalized.
