I think that's a sign that truly independent people are being pushed away from the Trump GOP, to a place where they'd vote against Republicans for the time being.

Pretty much spot on. I think this is why I'm so invested into this Russia thing. My family is pretty hardcore red, I've never really followed that path, to begin with, but I can't stomach the things that have been happening recently and be so willing to toe any line. Corruption is everywhere, but getting caught up in this is huge.

I saw this today, and I think your post speaks to it.

Yea I saw that this morning when I got into the office. I'd say it's pretty appropriate. I think it's getting much harder for people to say with a straight face that this president isn't compromised with Russia. I'm starting to feel the ones staunchly defending it (Rand Paul) are tied to it some-way that could be incredibly damaging to themselves.

Rand is an interesting character. According to 538, at least on voting, he has one of the strongest independent streaks, but his public statements have been very Trumpy. Like his whole line item budget analysis turned into "look at all these anti-trump things we could defund".

SHS at the press briefing today left open the possibility that Trump would turn over former Russian Ambassador Michael McFaul to Russia to face phony charges.

This is one of those kinds of things that can outlive the Trump presidency, however long it is for the world. This is the kind of thing that gets people to not seek government service as a career. This is the kind of behavior that prevents foreign nationals from deciding to work with the US. This is a serious breech of faith.

I think he's bullet proof until he's an electoral liability. At some point he will become bad for the brand and he'll lose most of his support in the legislature.

If he can get by the midterms without losing both houses (and maybe even if he does lose both), then he's almost assuredly going to be the R candidate in 2020, in which case there's no way any R's are going to put the White House at risk of Cory Booker or the Ghost of Joe Biden or whatever pink-haired communist has shad's goat this week.
