I’d like to hear the “it’s a sacrifice” argument regarding Bezos and his wallet, even if you’re just spitballing.

Also let the record state that if you’re poor and have a child, it’s a “poor life decision”. This will negate many of 5AF’s posters’ existence but so be it.

I'm not asking for the sacrifice...it's a nice perk of extreme capitalism that he's putting in back in to the society that he runs. On the bottom of the scale, he could donate $0.00. Instead, he's at $11,000,000,000.69 last year or whatever. I don't know, that feels like a pretty good deal for whatever he's giving his money to...

I donated $X last year. Could I have done $X+$1? Surely. But again, that's just a count to infinity...it's just socialist imagination land...

And yes, getting anything that you can't reasonably afford or work your way into reasonably affording is probably not a great idea...creating wave after wave of ugly, incompetent children isn't our evolutionary purpose...I don't want having kids to be unreachable for what remains of our middle class, but just straight up funding productive sex and ignoring the fundamental mishaps that have led us to this point isn't very helpful...orrrrrrrrr, it is the solution and money has no real value and printing it endlessly is the solution, in which case, leave the "hoarding class" alone because they're not affecting anything, just Ctrl+P your way out of any jams...

I don’t really have an opinion on the Bezos thing one way or the other but did the math and $10 million for someone that has a net worth of $200 billion is comparative to $50 for someone that has a net worth of $1 million. christ

Because child care costs cripple the finances of the average-income family. That’s the whole purpose of the plan. To subsidize an unsustainable expense - even for the average American.

They don't have kids (or have fewer kids). Why on earth should parents be exempt from the principle of "Don't buy stuff you can't afford?"

Because there's only 40 million people in the U.S. under the age of 10 and we might run out if some people have to wait until 29 to have a kid instead of 25...

We part ways at 'standard decision.'

I don't think we're that far apart, really. I'd just prefer my tax dollars not to discriminate. I'd prefer the money going to the absurd military to be rerouted to all families. I'd prefer the entitlement bureaucracy to be abolished in favor of an easy to administer UBI. I can't have those things so I bang away on a message board to distract myself from life. A huge portion of this country would prefer to live in squalor than see themselves and someone else supported by the tax dollars that they (maybe?) pay. It's so stupid.

Child Tax Credit isn't the worst use of funds, but it does perpetuate a broken system and doesn't address the core problem of life being too expensive for a large swath of the public despite us living in a pretty well-off country.
I agree with this and all you’ve said about UBI.

I think what people aren’t understanding in this thread is that it’s a problem that a significant portion of Americans can’t afford to have a child - even if they are educated and employed. Do you understand how much child care costs?

You and the others who have had no inclination to breed saying “well don’t have kids then”…that’s your point. That it should be reserved for upper echelon income and that poor and “middle class” people should just ride it out childless.

That would actually be of significant benefit to the country, at least for the poor. Poverty is strongly associated with low intelligence. Intelligence is significantly heritable. That is, stupid people have stupid kids, who have more stupid kids. We would not be encouraging the stupid to breed. The incentives should go to the intelligent. I bet if you go to, say, CMU's robotics center or whatnot you'd find that the married people working there are childless or have no more than a couple kids. Go to a Butler Country trailer park and you'll find plenty of children being pumped out by idiots. That should be reversed. The child tax credits should be limited to, say, people with Master's degrees, and people who never graduated from high school should have to pay a tax on each child.

I don’t think poor people are having kids to get the tax credit.

No doubt, some poor people make bad decisions and shouldn’t have kids. Society pays for it. Also, some wealthy people make bad decisions and have kids. Society pays for that as well, just not in a way that is as tangible, usually.

I have 3 kids and pretty much live paycheck to paycheck, a lot of that is a choice as we give most of what we have after we use what we need. Money is probably down towards the bottom of the list of things I find important in my life. I wouldn't say I'm poor, because we are comfortable in the lifestyle we choose to live because we are smart people and have learned to make that work. I welcome any stimulus or extra income because I use what we have to and pump the rest of it back into society and my daily life is that much better because of it. I used to get stressed and angry and frustrated when it came to dealing with money and the best thing I have ever done is to drop that ranking of "money" in my life to the bottom of the **** list once we figured out how to make it work.

This is where my head was at when thinking about this topic. A good chunk of money would go back into the economy if child care were more reasonable.

Absolutely. If you have to work and just about everything from that job goes into child care, I would be bitter as hell about the system, it's exhausting.

We did the math when mrs meow was pregnant with our first. She was a substitute teacher at the time. You need a flexible schedule with that job. Day cares are not flexible. So the math of putting mini meow in day care 5 days a week and mrs meow getting 4 sub jobs a week netted us $8 a week. Needless to say, she didn’t work for the first nine months of his life until she got hired as a day care director.
