Politics And Current Events

Postby shmenguin » Thu Sep 16, 2021 12:17 pm

This wasn't how I expected the thread to go when I posted that news...
Quiet you. This has been both the most civil and most engaging string of posts in this thread in years...
Burnout. I can’t even muster outrage anymore and I think there’s sort of this national consensus about what’s happening in politics. And a recognition that the MSM is just a bunch of fluff, while the Afghanistan hot takes also took the Atlantic and other “prestige” publications down several pegs. Meanwhile Twitter is just full of the same complaints as always.

So I dunno…I feel like this thread will probably stay pretty civil until someone tries to downplay the next episode of domestic terrorism.

So is the book about being gay, or just deceptively gay? Or is it the same thing?

an athlete that is “deceptively quick” is quicker than they look (usually that’s a descriptor for a white guy)
Probably scrappy, too.
Really buys in. Glue guy

I
I'll be honest, the last 18 months has pretty much taken me off the Republican reservation. Which is a shame, because most of the Republicans and conservatives I know are fully vaccinated and don't buy into this idiocy.

I've said this before, but the older I get, the more I realize that I loathe stupid, unintelligent people of all political stripes. It's honestly refreshing interacting with people on here (usually) because you can all hold your own intellectually. And I think it's why I've drifted to the center over the years... A natural reaction to the increasing extremism and polarization on both sides. Yes, I know this issue specifically is mainly one side.

But yeah...my vote counts just as much as the stupid horse dewormer/antivax people and the blue haired gender fluid moonkins on Twitter. So that's great.

I've never held less hope for the future of the country. All I can do is raise my children to be good citizens and good people and protect them any way I can. What else can you do? It's not worth the stress/crippling anxiety to follow the news anymore.
Its November, 2022. MTG is looking like the front runner for speaker of the house. The PA statehouse is on the brink of complete disaster. Toomey’s Senate seat is available.

How are you voting, up and down the ballot?

MTG becomes speaker, Biden and Harris re-sign out of disgrace, MTG becomes president.

Almost half of new gun buyers women: research
https://thehill.com/homenews/news/57256 ... n-research
Nearly half of all new U.S. gun buyers since the start of 2019 were women, according to new data, a tremendous shift in the historically male-dominated market.

Preliminary results from the 2021 National Firearms Survey obtained by The Wall Street Journal found that an estimated 3.5 million women in the U.S. became gun owners between January 2019 and April 2021. In that same period, 4 million men became gun owners.

Past surveys have found only about 10 to 20 percent of gun owners were women.

In addition, the NSSF conducted retailer surveys last year, and those indicated that in 2020 as many as 40% of gun sales, or 8.4 million, went to people purchasing their first firearm. Another survey released just last week by NSSF look at gun sales so far in 2021, and 33.2% of buyers, or 3.2 million, were first-time buyers. The total number of guns in the USA is now estimated as at least 434 million, or enough to give a gun to everyone in the country with 100 million left over.

While I am amused by the thought exercise, I think with MTG you have a situation akin to AOC. The latter does not, as of today, have the ability to win a statewide election in New York. Similarly, I do not believe, as the Republican caucus is comprised today, that MTG could win an election for Speaker.

But I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they voted for Trump as Speaker. There's no requirement that the Speaker be a Member.

Man where is the government going to put all those guns after they go door to door confiscating them all?

Dems remained highly centrist even after the squad came on to the scene. Since MTG was elected, the official platform of the GOP veered to align with her “politics”. Whether or not Trump is responsible isn’t relevant. He would support her over McCarthy or even Stefanik. So it would be hers.

This is not a symmetrical situation.

Would that be reversed though? Like it was "deceptively complex"
I'm sad I missed the deceptively conversation.

When I'm on the golf course and I hit what is seemingly a nice drive and someone says "wow you bombed that" I will say "I am deceptively short". Meaning you'd think it was a long hit but you would have been deceived.

Therefore deceptively simple means you'd think it was complex but it was actually simplified nicely and therefore you've been deceived.

Thank you all for your time.
