So.... proposing to nominate someone like Neera Tanden for a Senate-confirmed role (OMB) has a highly bold-strategy-Cotton vibe.

Yeah, that is one hell of a grenade lob. Trying to appease the left wing of the party I guess, although she has made lifelong enemies of the Bernie peeps.

She has also spent the last 10 years or so doing multiple TV hits a week slagging off all the Republican Senators whose votes she will need for confirmation. She was particularly harsh on Collins following the Kavanaugh vote.

Was reading on CNN that every President since Clinton has had a least one cabinet nomination fail in the Senate. Whether or not her actual nomination is submitted to the Senate will depend on the GA Senate runoffs imo. If Democrats win both, it'll be a 50-50 Senate, with Veepala casting the tiebreaker, so I think they would proceed with her nomination. But if they only win one - or don't win either - I have a hard time seeing her making it through committee; I wouldn't subject her to the process at all in that scenario.

Neera will be a good test case for certain things. She would probably be the best person from a conservative perspective to head omb. She has no actual progressive agenda beyond trying to tweet snark at Ted Cruz. If they want to facilitate center figures into key slots, then this would be a good nomination to allow through.

In general though. I don’t see what Mitch has to gain by keeping his entire caucus in line to block all appointments. On an otherwise non-objectionable nominee, aside from being obnoxious online, does this keep all gop senators against?

This was never a question, the question will be whether our down the middle media bulwarks can supress their strongest compulsions and actually report the reality of the debates rather than as a he said she said.

I used to think so, don’t mind him anymore (when he was still on). I find Michael more annoying.
