to be more specific...a politically charged, divisive issue is a shitty vessel for this exercise, since public consensus is a major component of the equation. so...knock it off.

Marijuana legalization isn’t a politically charged debate?

In recent polls

Marijuana legalization

65% for

Assault Weapon ban

57% against ban

These are pretty close numbers.

I do not believe that either drug legalization or firearms ownership should be politically charged, divisive issues, but both of them are.

That you may be experiencing cognitive dissonance does not mean I have to modify my own behavior. You are not a mod.

ok. well. i'd wager 100% of people here agree that weed should be, at the least, fully decriminalized.

but sure, they're equivalent. we aren't arguing about something we all agree with again, no.

good talk. good talk.

Actually, Shyster, while this is being discussed - what do you think it's going to happen when they decriminalize weed, but it's clearly an issue when buying a firearm? Does it suddenly become legal to do both? Or is it still a no-go with weapons and weed?

If marijuana is removed as a controlled substance, then the prohibition should go away automatically. The federal gun laws don't refer explicitly to marijuana. Rather, under 18 U.S.C. § 922, the prohibition applies to anyone "who is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance (as defined in section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 802)." If the legalization is accomplished by removing marijuana from the ambit of the Controlled Substances Act, then it should automatically no longer have any impact on firearms because it comes in only by reference to the Controlled Substances Act.

So it should happen automatically. But this does strike me as an area where Congress might amend the gun laws to still include some sort of prohibition even if marijuana is otherwise legalized. That would be stupid, but Congress does stupid stuff all the time.

Semi-automatic rifles are perfectly legal to own and possess in a majority of states. Yet if you live in California, New York, Hawaii, etc., you're possibly going to have your life ruined for owning/possessing the same thing as a guy 100 miles away, who actually gets to profit off of it. What obligation does the federal government have to intervene and protect US citizens from those tyrannical state and local governments?
While I agree with this, in broad terms, it should be noted that no one living in Hawai'i is having their life ruined by owning the same thing as someone 100 miles away.

We have metal straws, but liberal paper straws are definitely in 4th place behind plastic and not using one.

lol, I've tried the paper straws and hated them. Just a really weird, unpleasant feeling when taking a drink. The metal straws intrigue me.

Paper straws are non-sense. That said, they're really sticking it to them libs with the plastic straws. Go Trump team, GO!

The metal ones are nice. My wife bought a knock-off brand Yeti that came with a stainless straw, and the straw itself gets super cold, too.

The first episode of Gastropod talks about different metals and their effect on taste. It's really cool.

Metal straws are good. Paper straws are god awful. Toddlers using a paper straw is a nightmare.

Woman Dies After Being Impaled by Reusable Metal Straw
A woman in England died after falling onto a reusable metal straw, which pierced her head, and the tragic accident has renewed debate over bans on plastic straws, according to news reports.

The woman, 60-year-old Elena Struthers-Gardner, was carrying a glass with a 10-inch-long stainless-steel straw when she fell and the straw impaled her eye, causing fatal brain injuries
