Just out of curiosity, does anyone here have any earthly conception of how much explosive it takes to blow up 2.5 square miles of territory?
Could you express this in units of McVeigh so I can better understand the quantity.

I get you, hadn't hit refresh on the page before typing.

But I mean, even two blocks is not exactly chump change. That's basically the Mythbusters cement truck boom.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was probably something on the order of 13.6 McVeighs. Or 0.15 Hiroshimas, minus the rads.

A more pertinent colloquial reference would be "a s**t ton more than you can pack into a pickup truck". :scared:

If Antwon Rose had been running at the cop with a gun in hand shouting I have a gun and I'm going to shoot you the cop would have been justified in shooting him.

If this dude was just sitting in his truck shouting socialism is the devil then shooting him would be bad.

So in case anyone was wondering, I just voted 'no' on the recall of Gov Newsom, but I voted for a Republican in the event the recall is successful. Guy was mayor of San Diego, and is in no way Trumpy; pro-vax; pro-choice. Lots of reasons to think, "Hey, maybe consider not identifying as a Republican any more, cos they aren't you now." He is, in the words of the LA Time editorial board, "the least bad option in a recall field that ranges from the merely bad to the utterly catastrophic". (Not sure where Caitlyn Jenner lands on this spectrum, as she declined to respond to the board's inquiry.) None of the alternative candidates - Democrat or Republican - are capable of running the state.

The leading GOP candidate is a former talk radio host who has been running ads that feature a lot of butthurtery but not word one about why he'd be good at the job. The #2 GOP candidate is the guy who Newsom beat in the 2018 general election by 24 points.

It was less than 900 pounds of ANFO, but okay.

Whatever, the truck is just............ gone. It's there one second, and the next it's gray mist.

They set up like a mile away and didn't even have direct line-of-sight to the explosion, but still had to keep their mouths open on detonation to make sure they didn't rupture their eardrums from the overpressure.

My Qanon family member just posted a conspiracy theory that the US Air Force plane taking off in Afghanistan from those viral videos was actually an inflatable decoy. To what end I have no idea.

Larry David runs into Alan Dershowitz at the grocery store:
It seems that Alan Dershowitz’s ties to the Trump administration have made him persona non grata among the Martha’s Vineyard elite — including Larry David.

A Page Six spy spotted the Harvard Law professor — who was once, like David, a fully paid-up member of the Democratic cool kids — bumping into the comic on the porch of the island’s picturesque convenience store and community hub Chilmark General Store, and found their exchange so bizarre that they “wrote it down to remember it.”

Page Six strongly recommends that readers enjoy the following while playing the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” theme in their heads.

Dershowitz: “We can still talk, Larry.”

David: “No. No. We really can’t. I saw you. I saw you with your arm around [former Trump Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo! It’s disgusting!”

Dersh: “He’s my former student [at Harvard Law]. I greet all of my former students that way. I can’t greet my former students?”

David: “It’s disgusting. Your whole enclave — it’s disgusting. You’re disgusting!”

Added the stunned source, “Larry walks away. Alan takes off his T-shirt to reveal another T-shirt [underneath it] that says, ‘It’s The Constitution Stupid!’.”

We’re told Dersh “drove off in an old, dirty Volvo.”

The weirdest thing in that story is Alan Dershowitz was wearing a tshirt underneath another tshirt that said it’s the constitution, stupid.

Imagine planning that out in the morning when you are getting dressed

I don't know who ye tool bag is here, but the C-17 uses a variant of the same engines as a 757. Keep an eye out for all the ground crew the next time you fly commercial.

It's almost like you can't judge stuff from still photos.

That it would happen in 11 days is sort of alarming, and to the extent that US military officials are saying none of their game planning contemplated this degree of rapidity is, to put it mildly, troubling.

IMO, the real scandal here is the extent of the lying. Several Washington Post reporters have a book coming out at the end of the month on what the Post calls the Afghanistan Papers, which is basically a series of documents that reveal that high-ranking military and government officials have generally held the opinion for years that the war was unwinnable, that the Afghan government was irredeemably corrupt, that the Afghan military was a farce, etc. I've pre-ordered the Kindle version and look forward to reading it. The Post started running articles on the Afghanistan Papers in 2019. Essentially, it was clear even during the Bush administration that Afghanistan could never be set up as a functional democratic nation capable of resisting a return to the Taliban, but there have been overt and sustained efforts by the US government to deliberately mislead the public and keep that fact a secret. And those lies cross party lines. Bush knew it. Obama knew it. Trump knew it. Biden knew it. Biden at least had the balls to finally pull out (after thousands of deaths and over a trillion dollars wasted), but any attempt at the current administration to feign surprise at the rapidity at which the Taliban took back over is utter bullcrap.

Glen Greenwald also has a good article on this at his Substack here. A whole bunch of the WikiLeaks material that Edward Snowden provided related to Afghanistan and the levels of surveillance the US government had in place. Greenwald says WikiLeaks actually held back information about Afghanistan because they didn't want to risk US lives. He can say it now, and basically the NSA has every single cell phone in the entire country bugged. Greenwald says, "There was virtually nothing that could happen in Afghanistan without the U.S. intelligence community’s knowledge. There is simply no way that they got everything so completely wrong while innocently and sincerely trying to tell Americans the truth about what was happening there."

I highly doubt that we will get any detailed investigation into any of this mess. Such an investigation would benefit neither party, because both Democratic and Republican administrations were active participants in the lies. I would also be willing to bet that Biden decided to pull the plug as soon into his administration as he could so that the US public will have plenty of time to get occupied by other things before the next election comes along.

In Biden's defense, when the Obama administration came into office they had a national security review of the situation in Afghanistan. This was in early 2009, and even at that time Biden was the sole voice advocating a complete withdrawal then, 12 years ago. So while I can accept the sincerity of his decision, I have a really hard time believing all the talk about "who knew????"

Many of the reporters I've heard talking about this have been saying that once you get below the rank of general officer there was very little optimism about the situation going back to, as you say, the Bush years.

The impending failure when the US left was obvious to anyone paying attention since 2001.

The explosion wasn’t even a boom so much as a weird buzz. Cool and a bit chilling IMO.
