I mean, 'flatten the curve' doesn't even really make sense outside of the context of hospital capacity.

we here on 5AF all understand this. we are generally smart people here, believe it or not. messaging that i recall was about saving lives - with hospital capacity as a secondary concerned. obviously there's a fuzzy overlap here since those are tightly connected.

Should also qualify that with "not everyone who caught it was a Trump supporter who ignored all of the warnings"

reminder...my point here is that he would have been more useful going rogue and making cable news tours as a private citizen rather than the cute face guy over trump's left shoulder.
This is a question worth asking, which would have been the greater good. And obviously a lot that goes into it, so I can see both sides of him staying within the confines of the establishment or going rogue. I'm not really sure what the better option would have been.

Everything I remember about it was saving lives in connection with keeping hospital capacity down.

I've always felt that it was to keep hospitals from imploding and therefore in turn saves lives longer term.

Bill DeBlasio beclowns himself again:

He also said:
“One of the things officers are trained to do is to give warnings,” de Blasio said. “If someone has done something wrong, but not rising to a criminal level, it’s perfectly appropriate for an NYPD officer to talk to them to say, ‘that was not appropriate, and if you did that on a higher level, that would be a crime.’ I think that has an educating impact on people.”

In addition to "educating," it's also unconstitutional. In the constitutional context, a "chilling effect" is the inhibition or discouragement of the legitimate exercise of legal rights by the threat of legal sanction. A chilling effect may be caused by actions such as the threat of a lawsuit or legal repercussions or any other legal action that would cause people to hesitate to exercise a legitimate right for fear of repercussions. Police showing up to "warn" people about speech that is not illegal would chill speech because people would be concerned that anything they say might result in cops knocking on their doors.

Moreover, police in many cases have a tenuous idea of what speech in this country is legal or not. For a recent example that got national attention, in 2019 police in Florida (of course it was Florida) arrested a Florida Man for disorderly conduct for having an "I eat ass" sign in the rear window of his truck. The problem with that is that 48 years previously in Cohen v. California the Supreme Court held that obscenities alone cannot be punished as disorderly conduct. I guess that wasn't long enough for police in Florida to get the message.

de Blasio’s comments are exactly what this country needs for unification. They give the police more power AND they’re being used to stamp on free speech

I think we can all agree that those are objectively terrible comments

Not enough people doing actual things on a level that is an actual crime to keep the NYPD busy, apparently.

Watched the video, I thought Reason was supposed to be anti-bootlicker?

I mean, hating Rupar probably trumps any ideological position. and i'm ok with that, he is a tremendous d-bag.

his commentary is very very bad. just not interesting at all for someone who writes professionally. but i like that he pulls video clips. 99% of them are fine. this one may be extremely problematic, and if so he should take a break and think about what he's doing.
