There’s a white supremacy conference being held in parallel. Literally. It’s not a cute euphemism. And there are speakers who were present at both conferences talking about white supremacy things.

There’s also a long-standing intentional troll tactic from the right that fits the nazi-ish stage design like a glove.

This is a hell of a time to cite us liberals and our wacky conspiracies. Instead of researching mid century iconographic trends, just go to any web site anywhere to learn about the GOP being a party of literal white supremacists. It’s a better foundation for this discussion.

The weaving of the WFH discussion with the "who's a nazi? What's a nazi?" discussion is a nice treat...

If I’m constantly having to defend myself as “not a neonazi organization”, maybe I take the 30 minutes necessary to familiarize yourself with nazi symbols to not put yourself in this kind of situation.

But that’s just a maybe.
I feel like the first ones free when it comes to this stuff. But it’s now what, the third or fourth time stuff like this has come about?

Yeah, I feel like this is appropriate. I looked at that thing without knowledge of what was being talked about and thought, "well, that looks like it's similar to a Nazi symbol, so the related news must have something to do with that." The Trump wing of the GOP is a group of being suggestive without saying thing outright all the time, so it's not really a stretch to think this wasn't an accident.

And what if it was an accident. That the admitted white supremacists accidentally made a Nazi-ish stage. What, then.

We say sorry for thinking that your stage construction reflected your stated ethos?

I’ve noticed less of this meandering towards pedantic side-details in nobody’s absence. Let’s keep that going.

Mike pence with 1% support for 2024. Quayle had 6%. So as a gift for being such a loyal tyrant cuck, he’s become the least electable VP ever.

We can cross that bridge when they apologize for "inadvertently" making the stage. Probably not happening, so probably not worth worrying about.

It’s on the wiki page. I didn’t know, but as I said before, if they knew enough about the sign to want to use it, they had to know its association with nazis, and just didn’t care
It's the shape of the stage. That thing you stand on. Who says they wanted to use that symbol or any symbol as the shape of the stage? If they'd printed it on their programs as the official logo or something, then you might have a point. That's not what happened.

Who spoke about "white supremacy things" at CPAC? Which speakers?

All right, everyone who had heard of the Odal rune and its Nazi connections before the last two days, please say so and explain how you already knew that.
We had Santa Monica Studios change several in-game runic designs (including repeated derivations of the Odal form) in the last God Of War title because they were too on-the-nose to stuff like this. We used the list compiled by the ADL as a guide.

The link between runic writing and white supremacists in Europe and North America is not at all this weirdly obscure thing. I mean, it's probably foreign to non-white supremacists, sure. Which is kind of the point. CPAC did not in any believable fashion 'accidentally' do this; the people involved in giving the final green light to the stage design may not have had any understanding of what they were signing off on, but the person responsible for the actual pen-to-paper design of the thing, maybe even a few lower-level people in the approval process......... yeah, it is very very very hard to believe that they didn't know what they were doing here.

Sitting congressman Paul Gosar.

For the rest, www.askjeeves.com and type “America 2016-2021” and start reading up about the material you think everyone’s having a moral panic about.

This is where I’m at

They’ve been losing the benefit of the doubt and this doesn’t help

The Republican Party itself isn’t outwardly nazi but a non-insignificant number of supporters self describe as Nazis. That kind of matters

Yes, and the 1 or 2 people who I think are really enjoying the Nazi revival don’t post here anymore, so this isn’t an indictment on anyone here. I admit - you aren’t nazis.

Not all GOP diehards are nazis, but let’s be real... neonazis ain’t voting for Joe Biden, and certainly not Kamala Harris. Trump and white bread Mike Pence are their boys.

And who says that the people who did this have any connection to white supremacists? You and others here are engaging in circular logic, in which you are using your proposition as proof. You admit that people who aren't white supremacists likely have never heard of this rune. I sure haven't, and not only have I read a lot of WWII history, but I grew up on an era where not only did the History Channel actually do history, but they played so many WWII documentaries that people called it the "Hitler Channel." I don't recall seeing this rune once. But you assert that the people who designed this must have done so intentionally, which means you are assuming they have an intricate familiarity with obscure (and this rule is obscure) Nazi iconography. Of course this stage design is proof that the CPAC organizers are Nazis. Why? Because only Nazis would know about this rune. But that's assuming they did know about the rune. Who says? Who are those people? Where is the proof that they know anything about uncommon WWII Nazi symbols?

Last month, the country’s leading neo-Nazi group did away with their swastika logo. Emboldened by Donald Trump’s victory in the election, they saw this as a moment where their movement could go mainstream.

The National Socialist Movement, which has its roots in the original American Nazi Party, has replaced it’s swastika insignia for an a pre-Roman symbol known as the Othala Rune also embraced by the Nazis.
From 2016.

CPAC made a stage with Nazi undertones? "Very unlikely!"

The Dems are going to come to my door and take my guns? "Very likely!"

Winking at white nationalists has been an established part of public persona since this all started. If that’s the agreed upon foundation, then the stage design conspiracy is plausible. Because of years of data.

If that’s not the agreed upon foundation, there’s no point in bothering.

Shyster, you are arguing that they copied, in exact shape and form, an 18-sided glyph that has known racist connotations in modern vernacular. And that it is the more reasonable take is to presume that they did so accidentally. That just does not pass the most elementary smell test.

The meaning of the rune is obscure to you, great; I'm actually thankful for that, because it means you're not into finding racist iconography to associate yourself with. But there is a very specific set of people in this country to whom that symbol holds significance. And, to be frank, I regard them as the bad guys in our shared story as a country in this moment in time. And the preeminent conservative comic-con event just put a nod-wink to them literally at center stage so that every person speaking at this event was standing framed within that imagery.
This is the flag of the National Socialist Movement on display at the Unite The Right rally in Charlottesville in 2017.
