Because it's "dumb" that a minority of the body can use it to prevent anything they don't like from passing. I don't think we really need to recite the history of the filibuster in the 20th century to block the government from passing civil rights legislations. But, we can glorify our heroes like Richard Russel who devoted their careers to acting like dehumanizing the black population was actually a noble act.

Yes, The Daily Show told me the filibuster was bad.

The filibuster is idiotic and y'all are just for it because you heard on Parler/Fox News that Democrats hate it.

Just admit you have no idea why it exists in parliamentary proceedings and Roberts Rules.

I mean I realize I'm discussing this with folks who don't think think the Senate should actually exist anyway so it's kind of a moot point to quibble about centuries of parliamentary niceties....that Fox News? invented arguments for.

Here's an article from the NY Times for it.

Allow me a few minutes to find a relevant clip from the Daily Show to explain why the modern Senate bears no real resemblance to the body as it was envisioned and constituted in the 18th century.

Well, you can thank the progressives who pushed through the 17th Amendment for that.

Also, I am not in favor of abandoning the filibuster. But the way they've got it deployed now makes it rife for abuse leading to complete stagnation.

I do, actually. Now it's time to bring the rules of the body in line with that reality.

Which is why the only real thing that needs to change is a return back to earning the filibuster with real filibustering.

The Senate functioned much better, and was a much better body before it become responsible to voters.

Making another House of Representatives ruins the power sharing and helped along the powerful executive.

Another reason why Woodrow Wilson was our worst president.

The 17th Amendment should be repealed. It upset the balance of power between the federal and state governments.

If you're a democrat and "against" the filibuster, you should be "cancelled" or just criticized for exercising poor judgement. The filibuster is idiotic.

TIL that Josh Hawley wrote a report defending militia members after the OKC Bombing. Guess he's always been an extremist.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 92509.html
"Many of the people populating these movements are not radical, right-wing, pro-assault weapons freaks as they were originally stereotyped," Mr Hawley wrote about militias in the column, The Kansas City Star reported.

"Dismissed by the media and treated with disdain by their elected leaders, these citizens come together and form groups that often draw more media fire as anti-government hate gatherings," mr Hawley wrote.

"Feeling alienated from their government and the rest of society, they often become disenchanted and slip into talks of 'conspiracy theories' about how the federal government is out to get them," he added.
I bet he's gone from 6 to midnight knowing he's now a part of this.

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley wrote a column at the age of 15...
...the column published in his hometown paper The Lexington News.
Lexington is a city in Lafayette County, Missouri. The population was 4,726 at the 2010 census.

TIL after reading the article that Josh Hawley was 15 years old at the time. Also, there's no link to the full column, so other than a few quotes, it's impossible to determine what exactly Hawley said.
