can someone explain the whole "pipeline" story for me? my cousin who lives in Houston and has a habit of posting stuff on FB before fact checking it is having a meltdown. both her husband and son are some kind of inspectors tied to oil and gas industry. she seems to think they'll all be out of work soon.

The pipeline is safer than trucks or rail, but it's a symbolic action handout to the environmental lobby (along with the canceling of new permits in oil and gas on Federal land) that's not based in science, but ideology.

It also unnecessarily triggers Canada.

That's a smidge misleading. Pipelines are safer based on lives lost during transportation which, of course they are because pipelines don't lead to truck/train accidents. Environmentally, it's more complex. This is a pretty good, in depth article (and advocates building more pipelines), that also discusses how more oil is spilled/lost/seeps into the environment via pipelines than other forms of transportation.

So which mode is safer? For oil, the short answer is: truck worse than train worse than pipeline worse than boat (Oilprice.com). But that’s only for human death and property destruction. For the amount of oil spilled per billion-ton-miles, it’s truck worse than pipeline worse than rail worse than boat (Congressional Research Service). Even more different is for environmental impact (dominated by impact to aquatic habitat), where it’s boat worse than pipeline worse than truck worse than rail.

I'm a big fan of Jimmy. Would have loved to have gone down to Plains and attended one of his Sunday School sessions.

We've talked about this before but he fished for years and years at Spruce Creek in Blair County, especially during his time in office. My stepdad was a member of the club and ran intrigued him once or twice. Genuine article.

My exact response to that news. That woman gave some of the worst press briefings and was as caustic as any acid while giving said briefings. But the elephants probably love her for whatever dumb reason. Hopefully they strike her down decidedly in the primary and never makes it to the general.
