welp, that was so angering and depressing i found myself hoping that luke mogelson would show me some evidence that he might possibly be a hyperbolic sensationalist, but nope, he's goddam fintan o'toole, and i was reminded once again that the most unhinged supporters of trumpism (though the passage of time suggests to me -more with each passing day- all trump supporters are unhinged...but for now i'll let the delineation stand) are but sadly pathetic and very small vessels of homophobia, transphobia, anti-semitism and white nationalism* (or, based on my experience, all of the aforementioned simultaneously), 99.9% of whom couldn't give a coherent sixty second speech about the constitution.Everyone should read when you have time. Sickening.

We the Living is better than both, IMO.I didn't hate Atlas Shrugged as much as you did, but agree that Fountainhead was clearly the better of the two. Neither is particularly my cup of tea.Fountainhead is atleast interesting. Atlas shrugged pure trash

The fact that trump continues to entertain this means 1/6 was probably real to a degree.
Also MyPillow guy needs his company canceled.

Obviously we need to be tracking domestic threats, and taking preemptive action where need be. I want to be clear about that because I'm sure this will be interpreted as advocating a laissez-faire approach to domestic extremism.
That said, this is definitely something that will merit watching in the coming months.

"We're going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so that you can't just spew disinformation and misinformation," Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told her Instagram followers this week. "It's one thing to have differing opinions but it's another thing entirely to just say things that are false. So that's something that we're looking into."
The socialist lawmaker isn't always careful about her words, but it's worrying when officials talk about a need to "rein in" the media in any context. There's really no way to cast government action to that end in a good light, no matter what policy tools are intended (Ocasio-Cortez's office hasn't responded to a request for comment). To let government agencies "rein in" the media is to put control over speech and the press in the hands of people who always see benefit in less scrutiny and criticism of their own activities.
My concern is that if it does head in that direction, the media will be all too willing to cheer them on, like they did in October 2001.Given that government officials' wish list of expanded powers are endless, and that they were calling for new laws well before the storming of the Capitol, we should expect a flurry of legislative proposals in the weeks and months to come. We'll need to scrutinize them very closely, on the assumption that they'll be as dangerous to freedom as past schemes to protect us from risks real and imagined.

I dont see much of an issue with it, given how we got to where we are now.
News orgs giving precedence to misinformation and not immediately putting it down is what created the environment that Trump exploited and ultimately led to *gestures broadly*.
We need to stop giving lies and misinformation the same airplay as the truth.

I understand the fear of the government controlling media, but when the media is openly lying, that’s just as bad

Hence why I said it merits watching. I don't disagree that misinformation has been extremely damaging to the country. I loathe FNC, Gateway Pundit, MSNBC, et al. for what they have done to sow discord. but I always get nervous when the government steps in and becomes the arbiter of what defines that word.I dont see much of an issue with it, given how we got to where we are now.

You've been one of the most vocal people on this board with your criticism of the police, which is why I'm surprised you've taken a decidedly statist stance on a variety of issues. I recall you were the only one that wouldn't have a problem if masks became mandatory on a permanent basis.
Misinformation runs both ways too. How many times has there been a reported hate crime or incidence of police brutality that has later turned out to be fabricated or exaggerated? I can think of multiple instances in the last year where media misinformation about those types of situations has led to rioting and violence before the facts come out. By that point, it was too late, as the flame had been lit.
When the government starts talking about cracking down on misinformation, it's a blade that cuts both ways.

And speaking to the example I mentioned, I can think of several situations where the media (CNN, NYT, etc) has blasted a headline about a black person being shot or an alleged hate crime as front page news. When the facts came out later in those situations where it was completely fabricated or misrepresented, that story was either buried on Page 17 or not mentioned altogether.
