I have complicated thoughts on this. If any journalist is using those phrases, they probably shouldn't be a journalist because those words are too colloquial (or they write for a moronic listicle site like Buzzfeed). Then again, if we're saying the word "insane" is off-limits, that's a bit ridiculous

"There was a crazy amount of people there" is 1) absolutely fine 2) terrible writing and they should look for other work.
