Is the USPS not a service? "Losing money" seems like an odd phrase to use when talking about a service like that...

How much money is our education system "losing" every year? How much money is the Coast Guard "losing" every year?

If USPS is a business, not a service, I apologize. Just seems weird.

Imagine people explaining this to Trump.

Under Title 39 of the US Code it is considered part of the Executive Branch, so I would say it's a service in that dichotomy.

So who's going to break first in this whole pandemic negotiation? All of them are potentially playing with lives right now because of voter suppression.

Oh my bad we're talking about assault weapons. I'd hate for America to lose its spot near top of the mass shootings chart. Carry on.

Do you have any idea what an "assault weapon" is? Honest question.

Democratic politicians and gun control activists have consistently demonstrated an embarrassing lack of knowledge on the issue they purport to be so passionate about. You are grossly oversimplifying the debate.

Harris is one a select few Democrats that has an actual legitimate track record on this front. (Which I suspect might be at least part of dodint's objection to her)

Biden/Harris is, IMO, the most anti-gun candidate combo in history. Both candidates not only have a documented history of backing and advocating gun bans, they freely brag about it.

Biden's "register guns and magazines under the NFA" plan would also limit ownership of those items to the rich. As part of that plan, everyone would have to pay a $200 tax to register each gun and 10+ round magazine. So if you own an AR-15 and 15 magazines, that would be $3,200 in taxes. Five guns and 30 magazines for them? Hope you have $7,000.

I've never understood why the average person wastes their money on a machine gun. pistols to protect your home, rifles to both protect your home and hunt with, those I understand. you don't need a full or semi automatic weapon to protect your home and family. I do recognize though that like most 'MURICA! things, it's not about need, it's about want. to each their own.

full disclosure: I don't own a single working firearm and never have. closest I get is my father's WWII army pistol which resides in our safe deposit box.

It's amazing (not really) how anti-gun folks revel in their ignorance.

My understanding of the reason the USPS was losing money in the first place was that the volume of first-class mail was way down. So why would an increased volume of first-class mail overwhelm the system?
The main drain on the USPS is the statutory requirement that they pre-fund 75 years worth of employee pension healthcare. In other words, they have to set aside money to pay for retiree healthcare for employees that haven't even been born yet. It's roughly a $72 billion boat anchor around the neck of the organization, that, if removed, would've seen the USPS report an operating profit in each of the last six years. (A fact acknowledged by President Trump's own postal task force 2 years ago) They are not permitted to use GAAP standards in accounting their financials, and the pre-fund requirement forces them to assume that every single postal employee will work for the USPS for their entire lives. If they were merely permitted to account for actual vested retirement healthcare benefits, instead of this loopy hypothetical that accounts for every postal employee, it would reduce their health fund deficit by something like $40 billion.

I am unaware of any other government agency or even a single private company that must operate under this kind of onerous restriction.

And the USPS is entirely self-funding. Their only revenue is the cost of postage and nominal amounts of merch sales. They get no tax money.

It is effectively illegal to own a machine gun in the US, and has been since the 1930s. You can do it, but it's prohibitively expensive to do so.

No one is buying a machine gun for home defense.

Only thing I can say about it is they are fun as hell to shoot. That being said, I have zero issues with them going the way of the dodo.

In the 24 hours following announcing Kamala Harris as his running mate, the Biden campaign raised $26 million, including 150,000 first-time donors.
